Latest Mobile Windows News: cPC will have built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth after all - but no cellular July 22, 2006; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] Initially cPC mobile computer with 2 processors and 2 operating systems was touted as Pocket PC phone (!) and Tablet PC in one! Later on cPC "engineering sample" units were being shipped for early adopters but they were not featuring any wireless built-in! Now it looks like DualCor - makers of cPC - are backpedalling and after all Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will be built-in: ALK and DELL release CoPilot Navigator 9 GPS Nav for Windows XP June 09, 2006; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] GPS unit used here is based on new software processing technology that uses power of the computer to higher extend... besides: it is nice deal for ALK Technologies - known by now as one of main providers of navigation software also for Windows Mobile... Since nowadays high-end smartphones/PDA phones are more expensive than some notebooks and ultra-mobile PCs, importance of mobile solutions for computers powered by Windows XP (and soon: Windows Vista) will be increasing... Sony VAIO UX now official May 16, 2006; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] This is a micro PC that takes your breath away just with looks:
... but the beauty of this computer is not skin deep: apart from built-in cellular phone connectivity and Wi-Fi, it has also more goodies on board: DualCor cPC losses mobile phone connectivity and degrades to UMPC Origami without wireless May 12, 2006; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] If you would like to get ultra mobile PC with mobile phone built-in then don't hold your breath and don't wait for cPC from DualCor! By end of May 2006 (this month!) several UMPC computers will be on sale (including very stylish Samsung Q1) so probably DualCor company decided to cut on features to shorten delivery date and is releasing cPC without (promised) mobile phone functionality built-in - just as an UMPC device with typical "touch pack" from Microsoft (application for Windows XP - similar to "Media Center" in MCE - that facilitates usage of the device with touch screen rather than with digitizer for which Tablet PC platform was originally designed):
DualCor cPC on sale for 2000 USD April 04, 2006; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] It is a bit more than 1500 USD announced at the beginning and also much more what will Microsoft Origami (UMPC) cost (starting with 600 USD in long term and available at 1000 USD at the beginning). Anyway: 3 years warranty and rich functionality (including Pocket PC phone and Windows XP in one device) may however justify this steep price ... for enterprises, but may make it not worth consideration for end users (consumers). DualCor cPC available for purchase for selected companies in early adopter program April 01, 2006; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] cPC from DualCor company is the only device that combines Windows Mobile for Pocket PC Phone Edition and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition in one device. It looks like DualCor failed to deliver on promise: to release the cPC in Q1 2006, so to save face they are announcing "LEAP" program designed for corporate customers - consumers still will not be able to buy this device.
There are 2 explanations of this situation: either DualCor cPC is a vaporware and once venture capital money will be used up, the company will go bankrupt, or, possibly: seeing that Microsoft Origami (Ultra Mobile PC) devices are coming soon (May 2006) the DualCor is repositioning itself to abandon consumer market and to focus on corporate market (companies) instead. The window of opportunity for cPC device is short - Origami/UPMC computers are coming very soon - so DualCor must hurry up in order not to become yet another Gizmondo-like failure... CeBIT 2006: hands-on with Microsoft Origami (Ultra Mobile PC) - is it worth all that buzz? March 12, 2006; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] Here we reveal truth about Microsoft Origami also known as "Ultra Mobile PC" - we go beyond the buzz and tell you how it is!
CNBC confirms that Ultra Mobile PC from Intel is Microsoft Origami Project March 08, 2006; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] CNBC confirms that UMPC = Ultra Mobile PC is in fact the Microsoft Origami and CNBC also reveals some details:
Ultra Mobile PC may be the Origami !? March 07, 2006; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] This week on March 9, 2006, CeBIT 2006 trade show opens and at the same time Microsoft will unveil then the Microsoft Origami Project - also at the CeBIT trade show (the biggest trade show about Information Technology and Communications in the world - we will be there on location as accredited press). In meantime an information about UMPC.com website has leaked, that may actually contain fresher information about Origami, than over one year old Flash presentation, that obviously (according to Microsoft employees) is a very old initial phase of this Origami concept development. Anyway: maybe instead of buying very sophisticated Pocket PC phone, users could consider buying a small Microsoft Smartphone in combination with Ultra Mobile PC (Origami):
... that will be less expensive than Tablet PC computers and only slightly more expensive than top notch Pocket PC phones! Truly Microsoft Origami may force some people to rethink mobility! Maybe it is the end of Pocket PC platform? Read on! Microsoft Origami = small Tablet PC with wheels and NO mobile phone February 26, 2006; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] It looks like we will have to revive our mobile mini PC section... because Microsoft gets serious about them at last! Poor Microsoft: some advertisement agency leaked photos (or rather video advertisement embedded in a Flash presentation) of Microsoft Origami project, that was supposed to be unveiled on March 2, 2006 Apart from being MP3 player, Microsoft Origami should compete with Sony PSP and be mobile gaming console:
Microsoft to announce Origami Project soon February 25, 2006; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] Origami Project is a new mobile platform from Microsoft: it is more than Windows Mobile and less than Windows XP Tablet PC Edition... Handango wants to sell software also for Tablet PC computers - Tablet PC marketplace July 13, 2005; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] Handango is one of the most evil companies on the market - they are ripping off developers of mobile software very much and maintain semi-monopolistic position as the biggest on-line shop with mobile software for Windows Mobile devices and other mobile platforms. Now they try to expand into Tablet PC software... We advice users of Windows Mobile and Tablet PC not to use Handango if possible! Service Pack 2 - one small step for Windows XP but one giant leap for Tablet PC August 10, 2004; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] While for regular users of Windows XP the Service Pack 2 is a significant enhancement, for users of Tablet PC computers however, Service Pack 2 is nothing less than a true revolution!
(on picture above: the new correction experience in Service Pack 2 for Tablet PC) In fact, after applying Service Pack 2 on a Tablet PC computer even name of the operating system changes to: "Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005". And we still have year 2004! Well, a new article from Microsoft is available now, that covers many new features and enhancements of Service Pack 2 for Tablet PC computers: TechEd 2004 Europe coverage : major upgrade to Tablet PC operating system coming this summer July 01, 2004; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] When it will be released (some time this summer) in full commercial version then it will be called "Windows XP, Tablet PC 2005 Edition". For now it is available as "Service Pack 2" in Beta (non-final) version for Windows XP Tablet PC edition. So what's new in the new version that you will be able to download for your Tablet PC quickly from Internet and take advantage from the new features immediately? Sony launches the smallest PC of the world: Sony VAIO U series May 12, 2004; [Ultra-Mobile PCs] Why would you like to buy Pocket PC that can run only limited number of software and most of it is primitive if you could have a regular PC of the size roughly speaking the same as Pocket PC? We have been thinking by now that such device will be released around year 2006 but it looks like Sony will release such device this year (in Japan: May 2004, elsewhere later on in the year):
