Earth to Microsoft: wake up and put more effort into smartphone platform! July 17, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. Certain high-ranking Microsoft manager, whom we would rather not mention by name, once said that smartphones are hardly any volume device - just a small niche. He couldn´t be more wrong. It is exactly right now, when smartphones are becoming huge volume device. CNET News.com elaborates on this topic: Qualcomm´s BREW [...] and Sun´s J2ME are at the core of these next-generation phones [...] Two other contenders hoping to take market share are Microsoft´s Windows-based Smartphone, and Nokia´s Symbian-based Series 60 [...] If history is a guide, given natural replacement rates and attractive price points, it should not be long before these "fat" phones represent the majority of new phones being sold in the United States. ... and full article you can find here. Microsoft still doesn´t get it right: it will be smartphones (no touch screen, single-handed use with keypad), and not PDA phones (big touch screen or full QWERTY keyboard) that will constitute the majority of cell phones and will decide about success or failure of given platform... but Microsoft still hails Pocket PC platform like a holy cow and is neglecting the smartphone.
