Smart phones continue to accelerate, but Microsoft smartphone still fails July 31, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. Within the volume of worldwide handset shipments, the market for converged handheld devices, or ´smartphones,´ continues to accelerate. In the second quarter of 2003, the worldwide converged handheld device market grew 330.7% year-over-year and 12.0% sequentially to 1.97 million units. The converged device market now makes up 1.7% of the total mobile phone market, compared with only 0.5% in the same quarter one year ago. [...]these devices may also include an expanding list of features, such as multimedia or email. These devices must match wireless telephony capability to evolved operating systems or application environments, such as the Palm OS, Microsoft Pocket PC Phone Edition 2002, Microsoft Windows Smartphone, and the Symbian platform. ... and here are the market share numbers for "converged devices" also known as "smart phones" or "PDA phones":

... where you can notice clearly that Microsoft powered phones - Microsoft Smartphone phones and Pocket PC phones - account to less than 15.8 % (that includes also Treo and other Palm OS based smart phones). As of now conclusion can be only one: Microsoft fails miserably in the cell phone market! The only hope are upcoming Microsoft smartphones that will run the new Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone operating system and will feature XScale processors, built-in cameras and Bluetooth...
