Java MIDP for Microsoft smartphone available for download August 08, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. ... and even some SPV users already downloaded it, installed and played with it.
SmartphoneFrance.info has found out in the vast cyberspace of Internet a Java virtual machine as a part of software package for MiTAC Smartphone ! More info (in French) from SmartphoneFrance.info is here. Check out also related discussion at MoDaCo (the best smartphone forum on the planet Earth) here. How to handle it? You can run setup.exe program and spoil your smartphone. Or you can simply copy JavaMan.cab and JavaWM.cab to \IPSM\Windows\Start Menu and install them from the Programs menu. After this you put midlets to \IPSM\TEMP\ directory and you can play with Java. During installation keep in mind to install it to the memory in Phone, not on the Memory Card (SD). It is a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) made by IBM and it is a part of software package for MiTAC smartphone (it is not from Insignia!). We have heard rumors that this JVM from IBM is not stable and not all midlets (wireless Java programs in MIDP standard) are running with it. Here you can see the processes running when some Java midlet is executing:
... where you can notice Java manager (JavaMang.exe) and the virtual machine (j9midpng.exe). Disclaimer: this Java is designed to work best with MiTAC smartphones so if you try it in your SPV, SPV E100 or Tanager, then you do it at your own risk! (not to mention that it may be illegal) Please note: msmobiles.com is not endorsing Java technology for Microsoft smartphone - it is slow and does not offer access to all features of the smartphone (example: no access to file system of the smartphone). msmobiles.com is endorsing .NET Compact Framework technologies as the best choice! (see also related web site here) See also our related news item, that describes in bigger detail this Java virtual machine: here.
