WebSphere Micro Environment Version 5.5 (micro Java by IBM) now runs in Microsoft smartphone August 08, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. New in Version 5: WebSphere Micro Environment is enabled for handsets running the following operating systems:
The WebSphere Micro Environment Version 5.5 update achieves further virtual machine footprint reductions. Also, just in time (JIT) and ahead of time (AOT) compilation options are available for additional platforms. [...] IBM also introduces elements from MIDP NG (2.0) that allow for the provisioning of MIDlets to devices. This solution will complement the work that IBM and its partners are providing in OAP provisioning servers. Major carriers such as Vodafone, Sprint, and KDDI have also outlined extensions to the MIDP specification for the provisioning of applications over-the-air (OTA) and for control of the application flow once an application has been placed onto a device. IBM has implemented the MIDP extensions that allow invocation of an application only from a specific URI. As the application terminates, it is sent back to a termination URI. In this manner, applications deployed to a handset are under the flow control determined by the carrier. [...] MIDP 2.0 recently shipped, after the release of WebSphere Micro Environment Version 5, and CLDC 2.0 will likely ship soon. MIDP 2.0 is substantially different from MIDP 1.0.2, and requires changes in both the class libraries implementation and the tools. Updating WebSphere Micro Environment for these profiles and configurations is a high priority, but development will take further time.
