Mike Wehrs from Microsoft likes OMA - a lot of free traveling and fun; no substance though
August 16, 2003 [General] | By anonymous 1.

Mike Wehrs is Mobility Divisionīs Director of Technology & Standards at Microsoft. Another incompetent bureaucrat? Judge for yourself...
  • When Microsoft smartphone will start selling at last in USA?
He couldnīt commit to a specific date, but said that Microsoft expects "significant volumes" to ship this calendar year, and they consider their own task done -- the Smartphone OS is complete and itīs largely a matter of getting the manufacturerīs devices approved and adopted
Comment: looks like "blame it on hardware manufacturer" is the motto of Microsoft! And who introduced stupid code signing? It was Microsoft! And who didnīt include the .NET CF in Smartphone 2002!? Heh? Microsoft should be more pro-active and also help in marketing of cell phones powered by its software - not just "our task is done, now letīs blame everything on hardware manufacturer"!

  • .NET just for enterprises, for consumers native C++ applications!
current Smartphone 2002 products lacked .NET, and questioned him about Microsoftīs efforts to move to .NET on handheld (and especially Smartphone) platforms. His response is that Microsoft still encourages and fully supports native code development, and views .NET deployment as focusing primarily on the enterprise
Comment: really? So what the heck is gaming API doing in .NET Compact Framework for Windows Mobile 2003 (both Pocket PC and Smartphone)? Is nowadays gaming an "enterprise application"? Or maybe he meant "enerprise" from Star Trek?

  • Mobile2Market process is sweet and easy! Code-signing and logo certification problems does not exist.
He also cited Microsoftīs Mobile2Market solution to make it easy for Smartphone developers to rapidly build and deploy native-code solutions, and to connect to operators for a relatively straightforward process.
Comment: God damn it, it looks like this guy is from other planet! While users and developers struggle with stupid code signing problems, not to mention costly certification, he is saying that everything is sweet.

  • Smartphone for Microsoft is a long-term game, 10 years or more! Stupid consumers and developers however must play it short-term.
Itīs very clear from his comments that Microsoft is not afraid of the slow initial Smartphone adoption and is in this market long-term.
Comment: while developers and consumers put their money where their mouth is, Microsoft doesnīt give a damn - it can affort it to approach this game with relax. Consumers and developers who spent their money on this platform? They apparently doesnīt matter for Microsoft in view of these comments.

  • Mike Wehrs likes OMA: a lot of traveling through exotic places, just for fun.
The upshot is that Mike is indeed working with the OMA to develop the next version of SyncML, and has hopes that the next SyncML solution will be more robust -- itīs not out of the question that Microsoft will eventually adopt a SyncML solution for ActiveSync, although this is not happening in the short term. At the same time, heīs working with the OMA to develop device management standards.
What is the point in working with OMA to develop next version of SyncML (XML standard for synchronization of personal data) if Microsoft does not intend to implement it at all (he admits it in the interview)? The point is: the guy likes traveling at companyīs cost.
... and we, stupid users of Microsoft smartphones must suffer, but guys from Microsoft have fun at our cost. They have long-term objectives. They donīt care about us - "users of now".
