Microsoft smartphone bashing review
September 04, 2003 [General] | By anonymous 1.

We present latest events and news items that refer critically to Microsoft smartphones in particular or to Microsoft´s efforts to enter cell phone industry in general. (see also last bashing review here)
  • smartphone offers only slow GPRS transfers

... according to Guy Kewney from NewsWireless.Net:
A team of Microsoft demonstrators visiting London recently to show off a feature of a new Windows Mobile smartphone expressed astonishment at the slow data rates available in the centre of the city. "Back in Seattle, we get far better data speeds," they summarised. "Probably, because there are so few users set up to use GPRS, the capacity is under-used in the US."
Comments: this guy is producing anti-Microsoft articles in such a way so that they could be re-published at The Register. In other words: he finds any opportunity to bash Microsoft cell phoens.

  • "Microsoft suffered Samsung setback" is a common view among analysts...

therefore one can notice such sentences like Microsoft rumble forward despite Samsung setbacks (from IT-Analysis.com) and Microsoft has had a hard time finding partners to use its own Smartphone software, and several big prospects including South Korea´s Samsung have switched sides to back the Symbian camp. (from BBC).
Comments: it is clearly certain that Samsung i600 - a CDMA cell phone powered by Microsoft smartphone software will be released in USA by the end of 2003 (trials are ongoing already), but in fact in Europe during trade shows Samsung prefers to show Symbian based smartphones only. So it looks like GSM version is not in sight soon.

  • Motorola dumps stakes in Symbian, but still releasing Symbian cell phones, so no reason to celebrate for Microsoft

    ... claim several sources.
Comments: well, it is a reason to celebrate somehow because Motorola realised that Symbian is just a puppet of Nokia and therefore it is not a solid long-term proposition for other cell phone vendors (because it makes no business sense)

  • Linux takes on Microsoft cell phones

... says TheFeature - a propaganda machine and full property of Nokia - publication that pretends to be a mobile Internet information hub, but in fact is nothing more than extended arm of Nokia. It could seem strange that he keeps mum on the topic "Linux takes on Symbian" but since we know already about his propagandistic role, it is clear that in fact it is "Nokia´s propagandists taking on poor Microsoft". By the way: TheFeature, despite employing over 30 editors at cost of Nokia and despite tens of thousands of dollars spent for banner advertisements still has shamefully low Google PageRank.

  • I cannot feed my daughters with Microsoft smartphone

... said Patrice, the webmaster of smartphony.org web site - major smartphone enthusiast web site in French language (but world known for passion and big repository of nice home screen designs). He closed his web site at the beginning of this week and is going to re-open it tomorrow but this time it will have additional sections: about Palm OS and Symbian smartphones and also new, non-Microsoft, pals on board.

  • Handango buries Microsoft smartphone software deeper, much deeper

... as you can observe here. Although previously it was just one click away from main page of Handango to see the list of Microsoft smartphone software, now it looks like Microsoft smartphone confusion at Handango steadily increases. First not allowing non-signed software to the listing and now separate branch for SPV and for Qtek - as if they would not be 100% compatible - what they in fact are.

  • sharp pictures of SPV2

... have been revealed by CoolSmartphone.com and many smartphone users rejoice built-in Bluetooth, built-in camera and the new Smartphone 2003 software, but the fact that this phone is powered by a slow CPU - the same as in old SPV phones - spoils the fun. Some people complain about slow processor and are right (unfortunately).

  • lack of SQL CE in Smartphone 2003 is not bad

... because nobody demands it: it was left out of 2002 and there wasn´t much demand that it be added for 2003 claims authoritatively Robert Levy, the "professional" MVP. Previosly he claimed that code signing and software locking are good and that 500 USD for logo certification is a fair fee. If Microsoft mobility groups surrounds itself with such yes-sayers then no wonder so many mistakes happen there. While we maybe can live without SQL CE for smartphone, the lack of Microsoft Reader for smartphone is clearly a violation of good taste...

  • Smartphone 2003 launched in China but Orange SPV users wait in vain for update

... what is simply a fact of life. Technically everybody agrees that Smarphone 2003 software can run in SPV and SPV E100 phones, but it is up to a non-existent good will of Orange to release the update. It concludes our bashing review this time.
