The never ending story: Smartphone code-signing Gehenna - this time: "we screwed-up Smartphone 2003 too"
September 09, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1.

We (i.e. fans of Microsoft smartphone) all have been thinking that Microsoft learned something from the big time screw-up with code signing during introduction of Microsoft Smartphone 2002 phones. Now the release of Smartphone 2003 phones is imminent and Microsoft repeats the same error and add on top of it some new juicy (Chinese style) stuff...

A question from some smartphone developer:
Will digital certificates purchased from GeoTrust work with Smartphone 2003? Do they also work with phones other than the SPV ?

Ori Amiga answers:
The GeoTrust certificates work on Smartphone 2003 (various devices) and it looks like GeoTrust has their code-signing program turned on. Note: this excludes the Smartphone 2003 devices currently releasing in China - I donīt think they picked up the GeoTrust certs. The certs are not present on Smartphone 2002.

(certs = certificates)

Or in other words: the certificates that developers bought for Smartphone 2002 will not work with all Smartphone 2003 devices. Bravo Microsoft! Again the big time screw up is coming and it looks like Microsoft on purpose does not want to achieve bigger market share in the cell phone industry - it wants just to grab some business customers, but millions over millions of mass market users are totaly of no interest to Microsoft as above example shows.

Just for the record: by now ALL Symbian cell phones allow for installation of any software by any user - user just gets a prompt with question whether the unsigned applications could be installed. Microsoft on the other hand has given to operators a machine gun in form of total software locking where users cannot install not-code signed software (like freeware, shareware, hobbyware) at all! It is like selling you a car but allowing to drive only streets allowed by Microsoft (and/or by given network operator).
