Orange answers officially about Smartphone 2003 upgrade for SPV and SPV E100 phones September 17, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. Our friends from MoDaCo have the best Microsoft smartphone forum on the Internet. Among them there is also an official representative responsible for Microsoft smartphone platform at Orange (third largest cellular network operator in EU). Now he has spoken out and answered some questions: Will Orange be providing a way of updating the current 2002 system to 2003 via an update, or will the current SPV and e100 users be restricted to 2002? A business decision has not been made on this yet. You may or may not know this but do you think we will see the MiTAC Mio in the UK on Orange? Orange are working with a a number of manufacturers evaluating a number of new smartphone products, it would be inappropriate at this time to comment on any one manufacturer. What is the word on the 1.6 update? We wanted to make the 1.6 update available to customers as soon as possible. However, [and this is related to the question below], there is a new GSM stack available that is currently being integrated. This would have meant releasing the 1.6 build and very soon afterwards releasing a new build that incorporated the new radio stack. Looking at it from a customer perspective, we felt it would be better to have one release rather than two. We expect a new release to be tested by the moderators next month and a new release to be made available in Q4. * * * Comments: it is sad that decisions about making available upgrade to Smartphone 2003 has not been taken yet at Orange! Smartphone 2003 phones are already being sold in China, so there is no technical problem with it, the only problem is to take business decision on this. In other words: Orange may deny upgrade to current version of Smartphone for about 80000 customers who bought SPV and SPV E100. It is like buying desktop PC, that can run only Windows 95 and the vendor of this desktop PC denies you ability to install Windows XP on it! Shame on Orange!
