Smartphone 2003 for developers? "We are not sure" says Microsoft September 23, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. It looks like Microsoft is not losing any opportunity to make mistakes in cell phone industry... For example: Microsoft is now selling Smartphone Developer Kit:
(on photo above: Mark Spain from Microsoft presents Microsoft´s smartphone developer kit) ... that includes a handset that works only with Smartphone 2002 (outdated version) software. Moreover it is not certain whether there ever will be update to Smartphone 2003 (current version, includes pre-installed .NET Compact Framework in ROM)!!! Microsoft writes officially: With the release of the SDK for Windows Mobile 2003-based Smartphones, Microsoft is working to establish if we can provide Smartphone Developer Kit owners with the opportunity to develop and test applications for the new platform on the device included in the kit. Please check back for updates regarding availability. Moreover Ori Amiga from Microsoft writes: We are working hard on the feasibility of providing an upgrade to the developer kit device. This work involves a number of partners who support the program so it takes some degree of coordination and effort e.g. identifying the appropriate OEM build, ensuring there is an upgrade path, ensuring we have a fulfillment mechanism, etc.. But generally Microsoft is confused about the situation! In one place (entry page for this kit) it writes: This device is an English only, Smartphone 2002 device. Smartphone 2002 does not support the .NET Compact Framework. ... but in other place (FAQ about this kit) Microsoft writes: Q: What version of Windows Mobile software for Smartphone is on the phone in the Windows Mobile Developer Kit for Smartphone? A: The kit currently ships with Windows Mobile 2003 software for Smartphone. Q: Will I be able to buy a Developer Kit with Windows Mobile 2003 software? A: Microsoft is investigating the feasibility of providing upgrades to exists Smartphone Developer Kit owners and how we might provide kits with Windows Mobile 2003 software for Smartphone. We will update this site when we have more information about upgrades. So now the sitution is that some selected (!) developers get unfair advantage of having Smartphone 2003 powered devices - Microsoft and Orange keep delivering Smartphone 2003 updates and devices to selected developers - but the majority of regular developers (and people in general) who bought the Smartphone Developer Kit are stuck with the outdated version of the operating system! Moreover Microsoft says, as you can see above that they are "investigating the feasibility of providing upgrades" - what indicates that it is not certain yet whether those who bought the developer kit will get this Smartphone 2003 upgrade at all! We kindly ask Microsoft to cease this scandalous behavior and to release IMMEDIATELY software upgrade to Smartphone 2003 for all people who bought the smartphone developer kit!!!
