Microsoft smartphones at Computex Taipei 2003, more info about Samsung i600 September 24, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. "Extending the familiarity of Windows to mobile devices" - under this slogan Microsoft is presenting its software offering to manufacturers of mobile devices and to people of Taiwan. Here is how the stand of Microsoft looks like at the Computex Taipei 2003 trade show:
All currently available Microsoft smartphones ("Canary"/SPV, "Tanager"/SPV E100, MiTAC 8380) are manufactured in Taiwan, and several upcoming models like Motorola MPx200 and Asus AGP-600 will also be manufactured there. The only Microsoft smartphone that is coming in near future, that is not produced in Taiwan is the Samsung i600 (i600 is Made in Korea)... By the way: the Samsung i600 has a PXA250 XScale processor (and not a Strong Arm as we thought previously). It also comes with SD I/O and can support Bluetooth, WI-FI, and a host of other SD card devices in place of additional memory. It is very close to getting final approval from Verizon (USA) for quick release in October. i600 runs however only in CDMA networks and thus it will be available in USA but not in the GSM-infested Europe. So how does Computex Taipei 2003 looks like from the point of view of Microsoft smartphone? Well, not so good... unfortunately the Asus AGP-600 phone (the only announced model apart from the "Voyager"/SPV2/C200" that also features built-in Bluetooth) was not presented! (it may indicate, that Asus AGP-600 will be postponed beyond year 2003) The only new model presented by vendors was the MiTAC Mio 8390, that however features no built-in Bluetooth and nobody knows when it really will be available in commercial (not just prototype) version, although rumors are that Mio 8390 will hit the markets in the year 2004.
