Live from Switzerland: Samsung has dumped Microsoft smartphone PLATFORM (!) and this is for real!
October 12, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1.
We are reporting live from Geneva, Switzerland, directly from
Media Centre of ITU World Telecom 2003 conference - a global
conference, that takes places once in 4 years.
Look at these photos of Microsoft smartphone made by Samsung (compared to "Tanager" made by HTC):
Above photos were taken today at Samsung´s stand at the ITU World
Telecom 2003 trade show that takes places now in Geneva,
Switzerland. Besides these photos, at the stand of Samsung, there is a description of this
phone that lists following features:
SCH-i600
Smartphone OS MITs
Features:
- Microsoft Smartphone OS
- Slim Form Factor (Clamshell type)
- Intel XScale PXA 250 CPU
- SD IO
- Pocket Outlook
- Windows Media Player
- (MP3, WMA, WVA)
- Voice Recognition
- 65 K Color TFT LCD
Memory: ROM 48 MB / RAM 32 MB
Display:
- Internal: 65 K TFT LCD (176x220)
- External: 65 K OLED (96x64)
Dimension: 87x54x23.5 mm
Weight: 130 g
A couple of these i600 phones was available at Samsung´s stand for
touching and one i600 was presented at Microsoft´s stand behind
the glass.
We have just talked to Samsung people (original Koreans, not some
local representatives), and got some old and some new information.
Here it goes:
- old: Samsung delivered already to Verizon (cellular operator
in USA that operates in CDMA standards) the Samsung SCH-i600 phones for testing purposes, not for consumers; release to
consumers is imminent (this year); please note also: Samsung SCH-i600 is bigger than Motorola MPx200 and has no built-in Bluetooth and no built-in camera - thus it has much less market chances than many other Microsoft smartphones
- new: Samsung has dumped Microsoft smartphone platform and at
this moment is releasing just the already developed SCH-i600 model
that is made for CDMA only (no GSM, no Europe), but is neither
developing nor planning to develop or release any other Microsoft
smartphone phones in near futre (next 6 months)
- new: Samsung is at this moment doing nothing in development of
new Microsoft smartphones, moreover there is no decision inside of
the Samsung to even develop them; Samsung people claim that if (!)
such decision will be taken then first Samsung smartphones for
GSM we would see at the earliest in second half of 2004, but they
underline that such decision has not been taken yet
- old: Samsung still is developing and releasing new smartphones
based on Palm OS and on Symbian
Conclusion: Samsung has dumped Microsoft smartphone for
time being and not only it is not developing new Microsoft
smartphones (other than already ready SCH-i600) but Samsung has
not even taken decision if it ever will. Please note, that we at
msmobiles.com sympathize very much with Microsoft and its
desire to find maximum number of vendors for Smartphone platform,
but unfortunately Microsoft must be realistic and stop relying on
Samsung.
