.NET revolution in smartphones begins: upgrade to Smartphone 2003 OS available for developer phones (Compal AR11) October 24, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. By now developers could use only emulator of Smartphone 2003 Operating System in order to test their applications. Testing in emulator is very ineffective. From today on, developers can test Smartphone 2003 applications in real hardware.

Please use original instructions from the document "ar11sp03_upgrade_sdmmc_download_1.0.doc" if you want to carry upgrade in your phone. Below instructions are just a copy to give you idea how it goes. * * * * * 1. Purpose: To upgrade SW from SP2002 to SP2003 using SD/MMC card. Please notice that this version of images (V 2.1.1055.0) is specific for developer upgrade only. 2. HW Requirement: SD/MMC Card Red USB Cable (for updating gsm.bin) Main Charger 3. SW Requirement: Get the zipped file from FTP. Unzip the file, you will get the binary files (*.bin) and the chain list file (*.lst). 4. Update Sequence: (1) Update the SP2003 Bootloader first (please refer to step 6). (2) Update the whole SP2003 binaries using the updated SP2003 Bootloader (please refer to step 7). (3) Cold boot the device (please refer to step 8). Please notice that you MUST follow this sequence to upgrade SW to SP2003, otherwise the system won’t work properly. 5. Remark: (1) Please format SD/MMC card in FAT16 format before updating SW. (No support for FAT32 or NTFS) (2) If you use card reader to copy the files to SD/MMC card, please notice that sometime the card reader will tell you file copied finished but it doesn’t. Please make sure if the files copied completely by checking the file size or use File Explorer via ActiveSync to copy the files. 6. Update Bootloader only: (1) Copy eboot.bin to SD/MMC card. (2) Copy chain-eboot.lst to SD/MMC card and rename it to chain.lst. (3) Plug-in main charger and you will see a splash screen. In the top of LCD will display “External Power Plugged”. (4) Press-and-hold on HOME + BACK key then press-and-hold on POWER key until a green progress bar appears. (Keypad LED will appear to indicate flash erase/program is in progress) !!! Don’t remove battery while updating otherwise the phone will crash !!! (5) Wait until progress bar disappears and keypad LED turns off. (6) Take off the battery and main charger then put the battery back. Perform power-on cycle in order to load updated bootloader for device. 7. Update the whole binaries: (1) Copy *.bin files, except EBOOT.bin, to SD/MMC card. (2) Copy chain-all.lst to SD/MMC card and rename it to chain.lst. (If you use 1900 band, please copy chain-all-1900.lst) (3) Press-and-hold on HOME + BACK key then plug-in Red USB Cable. Device will power-on itself then you will see a green progress bar and keypad LED appear to indicate flash erase/program is in progress. !!! Don’t remove battery while updating otherwise the phone will crash !!! (4) Device will reboot itself after downloading completely. (5) Power-off and go to step 8 to perform cold boot. Please notice that the SP2003 bootloader MUST be updated before you upgrade to SP2003. 8. To cold boot device: (1) Plug-in main charger and you will see a splash screen. In the top of LCD will display “External Power Plugged”. (2) Press-and-hold on ‘3’ + ‘*’ keys then press-and-hold on POWER key until a yellow progress bar appears. (At this time, the persistent storage is erasing) (3) After erasing the persistent storage, a blue progress bar will appear to indicate successful flash erase and file system format is in progress. (4) Once complete, device will continues its power on sequence. 9. Troubleshooting (1) No "External Power Plugged" appears after plugging in main charger? 1. Please take off the battery first, wait about 10 second and then insert the battery again. 2. Plug-in main charger again. The “External Power Plugged” should appear in the top of LCD. (2) Got a red bar while upgrading
