Yet more information about Microsoft Mobile Devices Division Activity at PDC
October 28, 2003 [General] | By anonymous 1.
In the past few months, Microsoft’s Mobile Devices Division has demonstrated great momentum around the Windows Mobile software for Smartphone and Pocket PC.
This momentum includes the launch of a new version of the platform for each category (Windows Mobile 2003 software for Pocket PC and Smartphone), several hardware announcements for both categories as well as the first Windows Mobile-based smart phone available in the US, the Motorola MPx200 (available via AT&T Wireless).
Adding to this momentum, today at the Microsoft Professional Developer Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles, Microsoft’s Mobile Devices Division will highlight enhancements around the 3 elements Microsoft has focused on to provide desktop and mobile developers with a fertile, flexible and powerful development environment, that they can easily utilize:
- Windows Mobile software development platform
- Visual Studio “Whidbey” development tools
- Mobile2Market program
This is great news for the wireless industry; we expect there will be a new wave of applications and services that will become available on these devices. From a business standpoint for developers, these announcements open the window of opportunity, stimulating broad growth in the addressable market. (According to IDC, smartphone makers shipped 3.6 million units worldwide last year, up to 160 percent from the year before. Those numbers are expected to mushroom to 80 million units worldwide by 2007. The smart device market is exploding!)

- Opportunities for developing mobile applications
Users are traveling with more mobile devices than ever before, and they want applications that travel with them. How do you build an application that runs on varying form factors, or has an intermittent network connection? What does the mobile development landscape look like when GPRS/WIFI protocol switching is prevalent? Who are the key value chain players in the mobile application industry, and how much money is in it for developers? The handset market has exceeded 1.2 billion devices. This, coupled with expanding platform capabilities, increasingly represents opportunities for ISVs, but with this opportunity comes new challenges. Learn from the designers of the Pocket PC, Smartphone, .NET Compact Framework, and Tablet PC about how you can design applications and services that go wherever your users do, and from industry leaders about the trends in distributing mobile applications and where the opportunities are.
- Device Innovation
Laptop sales are on the increase, new form factors like Tablet PC, Pocket PC, and Smartphone have arrived, PCs are getting smaller, and wireless access is proliferating across the globe. Mobile computing is an exciting area, with a lot of opportunities. But where is it going? What sort of form factors, input mechanisms, screen and other technologies can we expect to see? And what sort of mobile applications should you be thinking about for the future? Come see a team of leading Microsoft experts in the mobile space and gain insight into the future.
