XSForms and XSDesigner - XML based forms for data entry come to Windows Mobile
November 27, 2003 [Pocket PC phone] | By anonymous 1.

This is another proof, that Windows Mobile powered devices are the best platform for mobile enterprise applications!

By no means XML is a "new" technology, but now it enters also mobile devices arena - new declarative language for .NET from Microsoft is coming soon and new, XML based, approach is also visible in building of forms for mobile devices:

XSForms and XSDesigner - both programs put in your hands the tools necessary to capture data easily and rapidly with a Pocket PC. Creating XML based forms is acomplished on the Desktop PC with XSDesigner. Once the form is uploaded to XSForms on the PDA you can gather the data with the Pocket PC device. The accumulated data can be uploaded as an XML file to any HTTP server for further manipulation.

The great news: Both programs are now available for FREE to download from the vendor´s website http://www.grandasoft.com/Products/. The Software will stay free for private use even in future versions. Starting with version 2.0 a license fee will be effective for commercial use. (Prices have not been determined, yet). So if you have a Pocket PC PDA or phone you can try out the XML forms technology for free!

GrandaSoft releases XSDesigner and XSForms Version 1.0

GrandaSoft officially released Version 1.0 of XSDesigner and XSForms as freeware. These two programs fit hand in glove with each other to create XML based forms (XSDesigner) on a PC and then run XML based forms (XSForms) on Pocket PCs. This IS the fastest and easiest way to collect data with a Pocket PC. GrandaSoft, a spin -off from the German PICA AG, has created an industrial strength solution for capturing data quickly and easily on the fly. Originally, the software was designed for the industry. As the word spread more and more private users too liked the ease of use and speed of keeping punch lists, performing inventories, or simply keeping track of their DVD collection

The uses are many: Let’s do surveys at a convention booth or inventory a warehouse. Imagine the wine connoisseur on his trip to Italy and keeping track of his favorite wines on his Pocket PC for future shipments; how about a ‘Honey Do’ list, so your husband doesn’t run out of projects. Have the sales person run around the car lot and scan in the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of all cars left on the lot after closing. With a barcode scanner attached to the Pocket PC that is a cinch. Surely you can come to think of instances where you wished for a solution that would quickly and easily gather data you needed in digital format.

GrandaSoft XSDesigner and XSForms are implementing the XML standard for various reasons. One good reason is the easy transfer of gathered data from the Pocket PC running XSForms to any database back-end server connected to the Internet. Pocket PCs today come with various forms of networking built in: Bluetooth, WLAN, Ethernet, Infrared, etc. Internetworking capabilities allow almost any Pocket PC to upload the captured data with the push of a button to a back-end server anywhere on this planet. Well, with XSForms installed you certainly can!

The capabilities of XSDesigner and XSForms are many. GrandaSoft already is making further strides into the future for Pocket PCs. The intent is to write their own backend server program that lets you automatically import data from a Pocket PC to a SQL type database for further manipulation.

Both programs are available in English, German, and Spanish. Requests to help translate into more languages have come in for French, Italian, and Portuguese. GrandaSoft will furnish all required files to anyone who wishes to help on the translation project.
