Developing Smartphone 2002 Applications with Embedded Visual Basic (eVB) is now possible - thanks to a hacker!
November 29, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1.

Developing applications for MS Smartphone 2002 with Embedded Visual C++ (eVC) is very difficult (due to the complicated Windows API -like programming model, not just due to the usage of C/C++ language) and according to Microsoft it is the only way to develop these applications! Microsoft clearly said that it does not support eVB in software development for MS Smartphone, and that eVB is only for Pocket PC. Developing applications with eVB however is extremely easy - even hobbyists and people, who donīt have much in common with software programming can do it!

Please note: although it is possible to develop MS Smartphone 2003 applications with Visual Basic .NET, it requires however Visual Studio .NET (cost minimum: 1000 USD). eVB on the other hand is available for free - downloadable from Microsoftīs web site.

What does it mean for average smartphone user? It means that number of applications for MS smartpone may, thanks to this hack of eVB, increase very significantly...

John Cody - the hacker - writes:

Thought you couldnīt use eVB to develop Smartphone 2002 applications? Think again!

NOTE: This article describes how I hacked eVB for Smartphone 2002 development. My efforts so far yielded 99% seamless, integrated functionality. I am hoping, through a collaborative effort with the readers of this article, to bring that up to 100%. So, if you have any comments or suggestions to achieve that goal, please contact me so I can add your tip (with credit) to this article.

My eVB hack provides:
  • Near 100% Full Integrated support for Smartphone 2002 development
  • Supports real-time edit, run, break, step, watch support with a connected Smartphone 2002 device
  • Full support for Remote Tools such as Control Manager and Registry Editor
  • Supports Pocket PC 2000 ARM cpu-type Third-party ActiveX controls
  • Full support for the Application Install Wizard, so you can create installers for your Smartphone 2002 apps that will install from either a desktop PC (via activesync) or right on the device using CAB files (i.e Over-The-Air installations)
Prerequisites:
  • Windows 98se/2K/XP PC Embedded Visual Tools 3.0 with the following items installed:
  • Embedded Visual Basic 3.0
  • Pocket PC 2000 SDK installed (you still need to install this SDK even if you already have the Pocket PC 2002 SDK installed)
  • Pocket PC 2000 Emulator option installed (can only be installed on Win2K/XP PCīs)
  • It is highly recommended to have a physical Smartphone 2002 device correctly connected and synced to the development PC using Active Sync 3.6 or higher (see notes at end of article regarding emulator use)
