Motorola MPx220 coming in 2-3 months
December 07, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1.

Peter Rojas from Gizmodo writes:

Itīs pretty much an open secret that this February Motorola is planning to introduce the MPx220, an updated version of their MPx200 Smartphone thatīs supposed to run the 2003 version of the Smartphone operating system and have both Bluetooth and a built-in digital camera, three features which the MPx200 currently lacks. But what we didnīt know was that it is also supposed to support AT&T Wirelessī new high-speed EDGE data network.

Well, the information that MPx220 or any other new Microsoft smartphone from Motorola is coming soon is yet very unofficial and may yet appear to be just a rumor after all. However it is very likely that it will happen because MPx200 model was rushed to the market - to get it out as soon as possible - before Christmas shopping period and yet with old outdated operating system - and lacks some very needed features.

In USA currently used GSM bands are GSM1900 and GSM850 - both unknown in Europe - and in fact to get optimal coverage in USA new cell phones need to have both GSM1900 and GSM850. The old MPx200 however supports only one American standard - GSM1900. On the other hand AT&T Wireless (the first and only by now operator that sells MPx200) has launched lately EDGE network, so it is natural that it expects newly released cell phones to support it.

What is EDGE? EDGE is radio-interface add-on (upgrade) to the existing (!) GSM network, add-on that brings packet based data transmission much faster than GPRS. On contrary to 3G radio interfaces (like WCDMA), it does not require completely new cellular network infrastructure but it can be installed in many cases by just executing software update upon existing network equipment.... thatīs why operators love EDGE and hate 3G where whole new network must be built. In this respect EDGE is sometimes called "2.75G" (1G = analog, 2G = digital, 2.5G = slow packet based tranmission = GPRS). Since main competition of Microsoft smartphones - Symbian phones like Nokia 6600 - already now support EDGE network, then getting EDGE in the new Motorola MPx220 will mean that Microsoft smartphones will catch up to Symbian also radio interface -wise.
