Forget touch screen, digitiser is coming to MS Smartphone and Pocket PC December 07, 2003 [General] | By anonymous 1. Touch screen is not the best way of user input - not only with stylus but also with your fingers or other objects you can by mistake call some operations on the screen of the phone - thatīs why many people donīt like touch screen. There is much better solution out there, solution already used in Tablet PC computers: digitiser - a solution similar to the touch screen, but it requires special pen to use it - touching it with fingers, hand, or with stylus doesnīt cause any actions! The digitiser has over 10 times better resolution than touchscreen, so handwriting recognition will aslso improve. Good news is: it is coming soon to cell phones:
Electronics Weekly (3/12/03) writes: Pen technology goes portable next year Cambridge-based Wacom Components expects to see smartphones sporting its Penabled technology appear late next year. The European subsidiary of Japanese company Wacom, which makes pen-based interfaces for computers, said the inducive system - already found in Tablet PCs - uses a pen that is detected at 14 mm from the screen, enablling gesture recognition functions for zooming into documents and working with data. "With smartphones users are manipulating data, rather than simply viewing it,"said Justin Staines, sales and marketing director at Wacom. "To do that on a mobile device you need high accuracy and multiple functions.". The company has developed a demonstrator using a 2.2 inch Seiko Epson color LCD, and has just taped out an ASIC for use in mobiles. Unlike existing mobile devices, the sensor is mounted behind the display, so luminosity is unaffected. Wacomīs system draws less than 10 micro Amper in shallow standby mode, and around 1 mili Amper in operation.
