New version of ActiveSync Remote Display - control your Smartphone from your PC December 08, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. Information provided by certain other websites, that claim that no additional software is loaded on the smartphone, when the new ActiveSync Remote Display (part of Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys) is running, is absolutely not correct!
(on picture above: screen of MS Smartphone visible remotely on the PC; Symbian phones canīt do that with free software! - they need commercial one) In reality file "cerdisp2.exe" is automatically (and quite qickly so not everybody can notice) loaded to Smartphone to the directory "/Storage/windows" (in Smartphone 2003). It is as Microsoft writes: ActiveSync Remote Display - Display Pocket PC applications on your desktop or laptop without needing any device side configuration. - so the process of installation and running of the remote display is automatic and no configuration is needed but in reality there is a software component installed on the smartphone! Here is directory structure on the PC side of all Power Toys:
All in all the sheer availability of such remote display program for Windows XP, program available for everybody, not just for developers, again proves that Microsoft powered cell phones (this program works not only with MS Smartphone but also with Pocket PC) are significantly superior, technologically, to their Symbian competition! By buying Microsoft powered cell phone you get many sophisticated features, that are wholly impossible with Symbian phones, or are possible there but only with costy additional software. Some more information follows below. * * * * * NAME: ActiveSync Remote Display DESCRIPTION: This tool displays actions on a Pocket PC, including user input, remotely on the display of a desktop or laptop PC. This is a great tool for demonstrating the power of the Pocket PC to a large audience. It also allows developers to test their applications for the Pocket PC on a larger screen. REQUIREMENTS: Desktop/Laptop: ActiveSync 3.5 or later. Device Operating System: . Pocket PC 2000 or later version or . Windows CE 4.1 or later version. . Smartphone 2003 INSTRUCTIONS: Go to Start\Programs and open ActiveSync Remote Display. KNOWN ISSUES: If a Windows CE device is used and it does not have file \windows\toolhelp.dll, the tool will not be able to automatically close cerdisp2.exe on the device. The workaround is either manually closing the cerdisp2 process or copying toolhelp.dll to the \windows folder of the device. If you see error message "The OS or CPU of this device is unknown to this application", it usually means the CPU type of the current device, typically a Windows CE device, is not recognized by this tool. The workaround is 1. Find the CPU type of the device (from the manual or the manufacturer). 2. Copy folder of the device. 3. Run "cerhost2.exe -m" on the desktop/laptop. 4. Run cerdisp2.exe on the device. 5. When the remote display is no longer needed, terminate cerdisp2.exe on the device. Window resizing does not work. The only way to change the display size is to use the Zoom menu.
