Do not buy Sony notebooks! December 19, 2003 [General] | By anonymous 1. Sony´s Bluespace NE software (Bluetooth communication software), that is used in Sony made notebooks with built-in Bluetooth doesn´t work with Windows Mobile PDAs and smartphones. Just take a look at this screenshot of Bluespace NE software:
... where you can see, that one can bond/pair with Bluetooth-equipped MS Smartphone, but ActiveSync over Bluetooth is impossible... on picture above you can however also notice that Bluespace NE software connects without problems with "Remote Camera" over Bluetooth, but of course it must be camera made by Sony (here: Sony DSC-FX77). While Sony notebooks tend to be stylish and are being bought gladly by snobs for purpose of bragging and showing off, we however recommend you buying other notebook brands, such as Dell (www.dell.com) or Toshiba (www.toshiba.com) - these companies are selling also Windows Mobile devices and are taking care, that Bluetooth cooperation between notebook and PDA/smartphone is working flawlessly. So if you still have Sony Vaio notebook, then dump it at eBay quickly and get yourself some Dell or Toshiba! Some people may argue that it Microsoft, that is guilty of these communication problems with Sony notebooks! But it is wrong! Why? Because all other Bluetooth USB dongles and cards are working fine with Bluetooth in Windows Mobile devices. Because also built-in Bluetooth implementations in other notebooks, like Dell or Toshiba, are also communicating over Bleutooth with Windows Mobile devices without any problems! On the other hand Sony´s only purpose is to force users to buy Sony-only products. The same Sony notebooks are communicating over Bluetooth with Sony PDAs without any problems! Sony is also forcing users to use MemoryStick format for memory cards, while whole industry agreed on SD/MMC solution. To read more about Bluetooth problems in Sony notebooks click here - it´s an article from the PPCW.net website that specializes in wireless connectivity of Windows Mobile devices, website that also is directly selling Microsoft powered cellphones - both Pocket PC phones and MS Smartphones - here. Disclaimer: one must admit however, that Sony offers some exclusive features, not available in products from other companies, but are these additional features worth the big premium price? No! One of such features is existence of BIP profile (BIP = Basic Imaging Profile) in the Sony´s Bluetoot communication software, profile that allows for "Remote Camera" function. Sony bundles application for using of this "Remote Camera" function, application of name "Network Smart Capture". With this application one can connect from the notebook to remote camera wirelessly over Bluetooth and do: still capture, video recording or webcam function. Here is a still capture of the display of the notebook, that shows picture of the "Network Smart Capture" software taken over Bluetooth by the "Network Smart Capture" software (!):
.. where you can see an effect similar to taking photo of yourself in the mirror. Yes, taking pictures over Bluetooth is fancy and very geeky. But unfortunately maximum resolution for still captures taken over Bluetooth is only 640x480 (0.3 megapixel) although the camera itself features 4 megapixel! In other words truly: getting Sony just for the sake of Sony brand, is not worth the premium price.
