It is not a secret anymore: Motorola dumps Symbian OS in favor of Windows Mobile from Microsoft
December 20, 2003 [General] | By anonymous 1.

The company also said this week it was dropping the Symbian OS in favor of Microsoft´s Windows Mobile

Symbian is owned in majority by Nokia (Finland) and Psion (UK). Due to the sheer volume of sales of Symbian powered cell phones one can say however, that in reality Symbian is just a cover-up for insincere intentions of Nokia, for Nokia´s pretending, that Symbian is an open industry initiative - after all Nokia is developing its own Series 60 and Series 90 software, and is discarding the Symbian UIQ totally. Symbian is therefore doomed to become - sooner or later - a subsidiary fully owned by Nokia and in fact Symbian is just a cover-up operation having one purpose in mind: to stop Microsoft from succeeding in cell phone industry. Many hardware manufacturers and operators however already are beginning to understand the fact, that it is not worth to produce cellphones based on Symbian OS because they will have to compete with strong Nokia brand - being literally cannibalized by that brand. On the other hand Microsoft doesn´t produce any cellphones, just the software - i.e. "Windows Mobile", that includes both Microsoft Smartphone and Pocket PC phone edition operating systems - therefore Microsoft is not in a position to endanger license takers of this software. Firstly Vodafone - the biggest operator in the world - got very angry at Nokia and started ordering handsets for its incredibly succesful Vodafone Live! service from Sharp and Samsung while ignoring Nokia, and now also Motorola moves away from Nokia´s subsidiary also known as "Symbian", and Motorola is taking strategic decision to go for Windows Mobile:

Motorola made a play for the news this week, not only appointing a new CEO, but also when word of a follow-up to their V70 roto-Moto handset leaked out, though it appeared as if the company moved to quash any rumors about the device. The company also said this week it was dropping the Symbian OS in favor of Microsoft´s Windows Mobile, a move that really wasn´t too surprising since the company sold its interest in the venture a few months ago when it first announced its partnership with MS. The company will release the successor to its first Symbian handset, the 3G-equipped A925, but that looks to be the company´s last device featuring the OS.

You Cannot Have Your Cake And Eat It Too!

A fact: Nokia employs over 10000 people working on Symbian based cell phones. Any Nokia propaganda that claims that Symbian is an open initiative, where whole industry participates is just a cover-up. In reality Nokia wants to eat cake (prevent MS from succeeding by selling licenses to other hardware vendors) and have cake (increase it´s insane market share in cell phone industry - now 40% and still growing). It is a clear contradiction - to sell software and make hardware: Apple Computer corporation tried that in past - released it´s Mac OS to clone producers and at the end it didn´t work out and now again Apple is the only hardware vendor using Mac OS and former "Mac OS" license takers went busted. The very same will happen with Symbian and Nokia. We hope that by now - after steps of Vodafone and Motorola - it has become clear, that it is Nokia, that plays unfair. Not Microsoft.
