Big tragedy: Vodafone dumps Microsoft smartphone December 22, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. Previously T-Mobile dumped Microsoft smartphone saying that it is not good enough for them, and now also Vodafone joins the party: Vodafone, the worldīs largest mobile phone company, is to delay the introduction of a new operating system developed by Microsoft, in a setback to the US software giantīs ambitions in the telecommunications industry. Arun Sarin, Vodafone chief executive, hinted that Microsoft needed to make further improvements to its system before Vodafone would consider using it in its handsets. In an interview with the Financial Times, Mr Sarin said: "In our view, itīs not quite ready for prime time." ... writes Financial Times today here. Why it is a big tragedy for Microsoft smartphone? Because Vodafone is the biggest and the most successful cellular network operator in the world and itīs "Vodafone Live!" service is an ideal towards which several other operators are working. If Vodafone (the largest operator in the world) and T-Mobile (second largest operator in the world) are saying that Microsoft smartphone is not good enough for them then it truly is a tragedy. On the other hand we must admit, that the latest Microsoft smartphone - Orange SPV E200 (aka "HTC Voyager") - despite running the latest operating system - Smartphone 2003 - still has some incredible problems like: very short cellphone battery life, no ability to connect over Bluetooth with Pocket PC 2003 devices (although both are made by Microsoft!), problems with dialing up from various notebooks with Bluetooth, poor voice calls quality, etc. etc. Over one year has passed since October 2002 - the official introduction of the first Microsoft smartphones to the market - but still Microsoft failed to address many problems, even in the latest generation of smartphones! In this context it is not strange, that Juha Christensen - the marketing boss of MS Smartphone - was fired by the end of November 2003... The only hope now, for Microsoft smartphone fans, is that the update to Smartphone 2003 for Orange SPV E200 that is coming in 2-3 months (first half of year 2004) - will resolve these issues... Disclaimer: by the term "dump" we mean "delayed without giving release date". Of course sooner or later both Vodafone and T-Mobile will introduce Microsoft smartphones, but for now the reality is that they decided not to release them.
