Review: Toshiba E800 with built-in Wi-Fi December 22, 2003 [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] | By anonymous 1. Toshiba E800 is the best Pocket PC device of all times, mainly due to the fact that it has a display with resolution of 640x480 pixels (browsing Internet with such resolution is a bliss, compared to all other Pocket PCs that use 320x240)! It also features 128 MB RAM, built-in SDIO and CF slots and graphics accelerator with its own 2MB RAM.
Please note: now, shortly before Christmas, this Pocket PC is sold out in EU already - despite the decent price of less than 600 Euro! (and users must wait till 2004 to buy it) Just take a look at this picture that shows how much better is the new resolution:
... where you can see that 480x640 for Pocket PC and 240x320 for Smartphone are the new top resolutions for the next generation Windows Mobile devices and you can notice that 480x640 gives 4 times more area for the user! Toshiba has followed the same strategy with the e800 which comes in Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless varieties. I am looking at the Bluetooth version here, but it is the same price as the WiFi version, and the only other differences between the two are a slight weight hike for the WiFi version (198g as opposed to 195g), and some wireless appropriate software differences. Note that when you see the e800 advertised as supporting Voice over IP it is the WiFi version to which that applies, and to take advantage you will need a separate subscription to a service provider. To read the review in full click here. Please note: complaints in the review about lack of support in many applications for thew new high resolution are not grounded. Why? Because one can download here free utility that resolves this problem - so that many other applications can take advantage of this high resolution.
