IEEE 802.1x standard is simply a standard for passing EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) over a wired or wireless LAN. With 802.1x, you package EAP messages in Ethernet frames and donīt use PPP. 802.1x brings much more security to Wi-Fi networks and is nowadays standard in several enterprises.
