Smartphone RSS for Microsoft Smartphone 2003 released December 29, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. This is a simple RSS reader for Microsoft Smartphone, that shows list of channels:
... and then for each channel it shows list of items:
... and then each item can be opened in a regular browser (Pocket Internet Explorer) - by the "Show Item in browser" menu position. The "Item info" shows only a title of the item plus some a little bit of additional info but not the content of the item. Unfortunately this program supports only some limited number of RSS formats - our RSS channel available at xml.msmobiles.com is not working with this program! This program cannot handle all the variations of RSS (there are 5 versions starting with 0.90 and ending with 2.0). To download this program click here. Then save file sprss.cab from the link "SmartPhone 2003 RSS Reader" to harddisk. Then copy this file to /Strage/Windows/Start Menu/Accessories . Then start this sprss.cab from the menu Start / Accessories / sprss to install it. After installation the program will appear in the main menu. * * * * * What is RSS? RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs. But itīs not just for news. Pretty much anything that can be broken down into discrete items can be syndicated via RSS. RSS format exactly speaking is an XML. What is XML? XML is a meta-format that allows for definition of domain specific formats and at the same time is easily readable by machines (by software called "XML parsers"). Since .NET runtime, which is pre-installed in ROM of Smartphone 2003 has also XML parser built-in, it means that writing RSS readers for MS Smartphone is very easy because it relies on the built-in XML parser usage. The "Smartphone RSS" program is a good start but it requires more work and particularly support of more RSS formats, since basic requirement for good RSS reader is to handle all the variations of RSS.
