HTC Himalaya susceptible to cracks December 31, 2003 [Pocket PC phone] | By anonymous 1. UPDATED: Part 2 added. Microsoft Smartphones donīt have this problem, because they donīt have a touch sensitive displays and even careless, unconcerned carrying them in a pocket cannot destroy them (the worst you can get in MS Smartphone is a little scratch, but not a crack). However the situation with Pocket PC phones is different. Now it appears that HTC Himalaya (i-mate Pocket PC phone, XDA II, MDA II) is very susceptible to cracks - so get a case for your Himalaya immediately or face total loss of money! On the other hand you may consider buying Microsoft smartphone instead.. This little crack at HTC Himalaya cellphone (here: i-mate Pocket PC phone) looks innocently:
... and here you can see that actually it looks like the phone is still working:
...but in reality it immediately becomes totally unusable - the touchscreen is not working at all! And without a functioning touch screen you canīt even proceed to the operating system because you get a message at the start "Tap the screen to set up your Pocket PC" ! Yes, you can tap but touchscreen is not working so you canīt use the phone at all. Here you can see that viewed from the angle the crack is more visible:
... and here is another closer look at the crack:
You may think that it is not a problem at all because you can get the phone repaired but - surprise, surprise - nobody wants to repair these Pocket PC phones and usually the customer is blamed for destroying his/her unit! In other words: if the shop, in which you purchased the phone doesnīt want to replace it then your money is totally lost. Here are some impressions from our reader: Now that I had invested $850 in the i-Mate (an amazing device!) I put on the screen protectors and purchased an upgraded leather case for it right out the gate! I did not want to chance it. I do realize that it is difficult to proove that is not due to user error, however, if you look at the unit, itīs clear that it has not been dropped (to date at least!). There are no dents, or scratches. Itīs otherwise brand new. The glass has no impact point - it has just shattered, as if left in ice cold and then put into hot water. Iīm convinced itīs due to the way that this product is manufactured! As I had mentioned, when I first took the product out of the box, I was quite concerned that the glass could easily shatter as there is pressure put on the glass easilty. You see, the product can actually be bent! Itīs very poorly designed for such an incredibly expensive and otherwise well thought out product. You can take one edge of the device, exert the smallest amount of pressure and literally twist it with your hand, making the glass the only thing to absorb the pressure. Our advices:
Part 2 In theory: in the manual of the phone, in the warranty page from HTC, one can notice, that the i-mate Pockt PC phone has a worldwide warranty through HTC. They pay for all shipping back and forth. The copy of the warranty can be found here: http://www.imate.com/imate/imate_warranty.asp ... where you can notice this sentence: This Limited Warranty does not cover physical damage to the surface of the Product including cracks or scratches on the LCD screen So in theory yes, you can send it to HTC and get it repaired or get a new unit, but in practice - in case of the cracks to which this unit is particularly susceptible - not, you canīt send it to HTC and you canīt get it repaired or replaced! Moreover these intresting points can be noticed in the text of the warranty:
