Predictions for 2004
January 01, 2004 [General] | By anonymous 1.
The year 2004 has already arrived:
We present a look ahead at what´s sure to happen - as far as Microsoft powered cellphones are concerned - in year 2004:
- Motorola will release at least 3 new Microsoft Smartphones: MPx100, MPx220 and MPx300 - some of them with built-in camera and built-in Bluetooth but all of them powered by latest operating system: Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone; here is a quote from Chinese press about these 3 new Motorola smartphones:
- several Taiwan based companies will be announcing and releasing in year 2004 several new models of Microsoft Smartphones, those companies (they work NOW on new Microsoft smartphones) will be:
- High Tech Computer (HTC)
- Mitac International - MiTAC 8390 is to be announced, and details revealed, already on January 8, 2004 (Sammy Huang from MiTAC corporation promised to send us more info as soon as it will be available)
- Compal Communications (also: manufacturer of Motorola MPx100 and MPx300)
- Chi Mei Communications (also: manufacturer of Motorola MPx200 and MPx220)
- Asustek Computer (aka "Asus")
- Lite-on Technology
- First International Computer
- in total number of new Microsoft smartphones announced in year 2004 will exceed 20 and at least 10 new models will be released (not just announced) to the market
- Motorola will release upgrade to Smartphone 2003 for Motorola MPx200
- we will see several new, innovative and fascinating applications for Microsoft Smartphone 2003, some of them free, that will be developed with usage of .NET technology; in view of several new applications that will work only with Smartphone 2003, the old Smartphone 2002 operating system will become obsolete
- we will see more Pocket PC phones: among others the one with keypads (LG) and with keyboards (Legend Lenovo)
- first Microsoft powered cellphones that work in EDGE (2.75G) and WCDMA/UMTS (3G) cellular network will be announced (not yet released though) at the end of year 2004
- MDC 2004 USA will take place in San Francisco, March 23, 2004. During this conference it will become clear that Microsoft is serious about cellphone industry - Bill Gates will held keynote speech and first glimpses into next versions of Windows Mobile and Visual Studio .NET will be available there. MDC = Mobile Developer Conference - it´s a big event of type that neither Symbian nor Java camps don´t have. Even Russell Beattie - one of the most known Microsoft haters admits that MDC 2004 event will be great:
Microsoft [...]
finally has some decent phones in production (or will be by the time March rolls around), they´ll be stressing cellular technologies above all else with Windows Mobile 2003, .Net Compact, and the various Microsoft mobile phones all integrating seamlessly with Exchange and SQL Server in the Back Office.
...and then he goes on with admitting that neither Symbian nor Java can match Microsoft: May I say again, how nice it would be for Sun and Symbian to be holding this sort of high-profile event? Yes, I know the Symbian Exposium has technical sessions and JavaOne has many mobile-oriented sessions as well. However... compare those efforts to this from Microsoft (80+ technical sessions) and I think you´ll agree with me that there´s a need there for a separate, highly technical mobile-dev event which both teaches, inspires and organizes from either of those companies, no?
- in year 2004 SyChip company will release drivers for SDIO Wi-Fi cards for Microsoft Smartphone - thus users of several Microsoft smartphones will be able to use Wi-Fi at Wi-Fi hotspots, at home or at the office. Availability of Wi-Fi in Microsoft smartphone will spawn several free and commercial Voice over IP applications for this platform.
- Already previously Microsoft announced that future versions of Windows Mobile will have native support for high resolutions. In year 2004 we will see more (by now only Toshiba e800 has support for higher resolution) Windows Mobile devices with these new resolutions (blue: old, green: new):
