False reports about Vodafone, T-Mobile and others releasing Microsoft Smartphones January 13, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. Some distributors and shops that are selling GSM subscriptions (SIM cards) to end consumers, are starting to offer also Microsoft Smartphones (branded as i-mate, Qtek, etc.) in combination with such subscriptions.
Some journalists and publishers mistakenly think that it is Vodafone or T-Mobile, that are releasing Microsoft Smartphones! But in fact ... ... these are just distributors doing this what they do with many other non-Microsoft cellphones: combining GSM subscription with a bit cheaper cellphone. We donīt want to be specific, from where such false reports come - about various operators, not just about 2 mentioned above - but suffice to say that many people make this mistake in several countries and several continents. For a Microsoft Smartphone to be released by an operator, it must be branded by this operator (for example "O2 XPhone" or "T-Mobile SDA" or "Orange SPV e300") or it must be sold through operatorīs own distribution network (example: "Orange" original shops), not through some third party distributors offering third party smartphones! This distinction is important because original Microsoftīs business model for Microsoft smartphones covered only distribution by operators, but we observe lately that also other channels are now distributing smartphones, sometimes in combination with a subscription....
