The cult returns: iPaq Smartphone (Wireless PDA) coming this year January 14, 2004 [Pocket PC phone] | By anonymous 1. Before HP took over the Compaq, several prototype designs of Pocket PC phones based on Compaq iPaq were available:
... and some of them were even distributed to operators for testing, and one could even buy such a prototype at eBay. There were 3 models of these prototypes: Wi-Fi+Bluetooth (now implemented commercially in form of many iPaqs made by HP), GPRS/GSM+Bluetooth (just prototype) and CDMA1x+Bluetooth (just prototype). In the end only 1 out of 3 above mentioned prototypes has been made available commercially. Now, in year 2004, after the merger between HP and Compaq is long completed, HP wants to release "iPaq smartphone", that however will be powered by Pocket PC Phone Edition and will be combination of all 3 above mentioned prototypes - it will feature cellular network connectivity + Wi-Fi (802.11b unfortunately, not yet 802.11a) + Bluetooth 1.1. Please note: iPaq Pocket PC PDAs, particularly the one made yet by Compaq (before "merger" with HP), achieved a cult status and actually the hardware configuration of the original iPaq has become a basis for all other Pocket PCs - before iPaq, Pocket PCs had for example various processor types - ARM, MIPS, SH - but Microsoft chosen iPaq´s ARM as standard for future developments. Now, in the era of wireless convergence, in the era of "smartphones", the cult of iPaq returns.
