Motorola MPx200 again scores poorly in a review in German press
January 17, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1.

Being 3rd largest economy in the world and the biggest consumer market in EU, Germany is an important, albeit demanding, market for cellphones. Due to the fact, that Orange operator is not present in Germany, by now no Microsoft Smartphones were available there. Lately however the biggest (over 8 million customers) GSM service provider (not operator though) - debitel - started selling Motorola MPx200.

After being reviewed in German "connect" magazine, today renowned German business newspaper "Handelsblatt" (roughly comparable to The Wall Street Journal from USA) reviewed shortly the Motorola MPx200 - that is popularly recognized as "the first Microsoft Smartphone available in Germany".

The review concludes in this way:

One gets an idea, what would be possible, but unfortunately is not yet. Motorola has done its home work better than Microsoft. But if the Smartphone operating system will be revised, it can have chances in business - and Microsoft is known from this that only in the second try it really manages to bring out something worthwhile. It was also the case with PDAs. Yet admittedly there are hardly any reasons, to prefer this Motorola over Nokia 6600 or Sony Ericsson P900.

Please note: author of the review fails to notice that Motorola MPx200 runs an outdated operating system: Smartphone 2002, not a contemporary version - Smartphone 2003, which already resolved many problems with former version. However due to the fact, that it is neither clear nor certain whether upgrade to Smartphone 2003 will be ever available for MPx200 - it is just fair to evaluate the phone with the software it runs NOW.

Germany is a demanding and highly competitive cellphone market, dominated mainly by Siemens and Nokia. Microsoft may have problems to achieve any significant share in this market, if a branded (i.e. Motorola or Samsung) Microsoft Smartphones equipped both with built-in Bluetooth and built-in camera will not become available there soon.
