PocketVNC server for Pocket PC available January 18, 2004 [General] | By anonymous 1. Pocket PC PDAs are a powerful computers, and with arrival of Toshiba e800 with 640x480 resolution they are even able to compete with notebooks and Tabet PCs, as far as Internet browsing is concerned. By know everybody was thinking of PDAs as "client devices" but also this barrier seems to be broken now: VNC server (not just client!) is now available for Pocket PC PDAs: The PocketVNC server was implemented to offer the functionality of a VNC server running on a PocketPC device.
(on picture above: display of Pocket PC, with VNC server configuration dialog, seen remotely on the PC with help of VNC client for Windows) Some general information about VNC: The VNC (Virtual Network Client) provides a convenient way to access the visual output of servers or workstations, that have no output possibility, or are hard to reach physically. Input, in form of keyboard and pointing devices, as well as the visual output is transmitted over network to control the remote host. To get more information or to download it click here (this server is located in a university and you may have problems with connecting to it! we have tried several ISPs and only AOL worked out). Please note: Microsoft provides users with Remote Display utility to remotely view displays of Microsoft Smartphones and Pocket PC devices on the screen of a PC - thatīs why VNC server for Pocket PC may seem unnecessary at first glance, but itīs not correct: VNC clients are available for many platforms, including Mac and Linux, while Microsoftīs utility works only with Windows XP and only in combination with ActiveSync.
