Handango further confuses users and developers with introduction of new categories January 23, 2004 [General] | By anonymous 1. Handango has a semi-monopolistic position as far as online mobile software shops are concerned. On top of that Microsoft sponsors Handango in many ways: invites their employees to Redmond, sponsors their participation in trade shows, supports financially. Unfortunately Handango´s exposition of software for Microsoft Smarpthones can be depicted by nothing else than by the word "incompetence". Handango has just introduced yet more Microsoft Smartphone categories:
... what clearly is a big mistake from usability point of view because users need to click 3 times to see list of software for Microsoft Smartphone. Furthermore there are several smartphone choices, that are plain wrong and very confusing. For example Motorola MPx200 is both available as a software locked version at some operators and as totally unlocked at some other operators. Another example: still there is no category for smartphones powered by Smartphone 2003 operating system. It looks like Heather Arrington from Handango, that is responsible for Windows Mobile part of Handango, is a totally incompetent person (and very arrogant as you can see here). Instead of making just one big category for all Microsoft Smartphones (after all they are compatible with each other) - like it is with Pocket PC and Palm OS platforms - Handango is confusing and hurting the usability. Apart from the apparent incompetence of Heather Arrington from Handango, another reason of this confusion is that Handango wants to cash in from each hardware vendor and from each operator. This is a blatant exploitation of the semi-monopolistic position of Handango and total neglection of needs of users and developers! On top of that, despite being heavily sponsored by Microsoft, Handango is not a Microsoft oriented software shop, but is offering their "especially good connections with cellular network operators" also to PalmSource - as we learned lately from our own sources. Notice to users: Microsoft oriented software shops like www.smartphone.net (Microsoft Smartphone) and www.pocketgear.com (Pocket PC) offer also software for Windows Mobile devices but are giving more percent of sales to developers, so if you buy your software there, not at Handango, the developers get more money!
