Get mobile mojo at Handango!
January 26, 2004 [General] | By anonymous 1.

In a reaction to our story about latest changes at smartphone section of Handango, we got a reply that we publish hereby in an entirety:

I was disappointed to read your post about Handango this morning. I’m writing to correct some factual misstatements and offer some explanations. I would appreciate your posting this response.

Microsoft is a great partner. While we have a strong relationship, Microsoft does not support Handango financially in any way, as your post seems to indicate.

Certainly we have been slow to update our catalog with new Windows Mobile based smartphones. We are addressing the system issues which caused these delays, and in the future, we will add these devices more expediently. However, a device being absent from www.handango.com does not mean that we are not supporting it. While the Samsung i600 is only recently available on the Handango site, it has been available from our Verizon site since our launch with Verizon in November. Similarly, you can find the MPX-200 at motorola.handango.com/entertainment as part of our service offering to Motorola.

Your assertion that “they are compatible with each other” – implying that all applications run on all Windows Mobile smartphones – is wrong. Most Windows Mobile smartphones require a unique application signature. Thus, our catalog is organized by device to ensure that customers are truly seeing only apps that will work for their smartphones. Further, our operator partners Orange, Verizon and AWS, the three largest operators with Windows Mobile smartphones, have requested this structure to give their subscribers the best experience. We at Handango are serious about creating a great user experience, and I welcome any and all constructive criticism to help us better that experience.

Your sources report that we’re offering our “’especially good connections with cellular network operators’ also to PalmSource”. While we are a platform-agnostic company, this rumor is completely false, as the public record clearly indicates. In September, PalmSource chose Handango competitors to provide their download portals. In November, PalmSource launched a Mobility World program for mobile operators and those who serve them, and despite the presence of several competitors in this program, Handango has yet to be admitted. As a side note, your source might also be surprised to learn that the “Microsoft-oriented sites” you refer to in your post also run a Palm OS portal.

Lastly, Heather Arrington takes quite a beating in your post. As someone who works with Heather daily, I can assure you that she is the model of competence and professionalism. The many developers and Microsoft employees who know Heather understand, as I do, that she is an amazing advocate for the Windows Mobile community both in and outside of Handango.

We at Handango continue to pride ourselves on the strong service we offer for Windows Mobile operators, OEMs, developers and customers. We know that we have much room to improve, and working collaboratively with our members of the Windows Mobile ecosystem will help us all grow the market for applications and devices.

Best regards,

Clint Patterson
VP, Marketing
Handango
