Preview: SMARTLocator - the first in the world Location Based Services application for Microsoft smartphone February 02, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. We have tested the first in the world application for Microsoft smartphone that realizes Location Based Services. After opening it, you get your current location (the program uses GPRS - please notice small "G" letter in upper right corner):
... which you can zoom out to get this picture:
... and then you can even more zoom out:
Please note: the maps in various scales are being taken from the Internet over GPRS connection - so all these maps are not stored in the smartphone, but on servers, somewhere in the Internet. The application will be released to public in February 2004 and its main feature is to show you on the map where you are at the given moment - so never again you can get lost. Unfortunately the application has no map panning yet, and it yet has no "find nearest bank" (or restaurant, etc etc) function, but these features will be present - according to the software house that will release this application - in next versions. More informatin about this application - SMARTLocator for Microsoft Smartphone - at: http://www.txt-u.com/smartlocator (you can get there more information about this program, and also you can apply there to join the Beta Test Programme and get this application for testing purposes) Location Based Services are the holy grail promised by infrastructure vendors to be realized in the "3G" networks. As above application shows - there is no need to wait for "3G" because Location Based Services are available already for "2.5G" (2G = GSM, 2.5G = GPRS, 2.75G = EDGE, 3G = UMTS/WCDMA) ...
