Dilbert comes to Microsoft Smartphone February 10, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. No need to open web site with plenty of graphics and full of advertisements - itīs slow and it may costs you a lot of money (GPRS costs!). Instead you can get your latest Dilbert delivered to you through web services:
Currently "MS Mobile Servant" program pictured above supports these web services: -- Todayīs Dilbert Comic -- Currency converter (over 100 countries -- Stock market quotes -- Translation -- List of latest smartphone software additions Here is introduction about the program and general idea of web services: MS Mobiles Servant is a freeware program that is a consumer of web services. What is "web service" ? It is a service available at some remote server in the Internet, that is accessible through HTTP protocol - the same as this one used in regular Internet browsers. Thanks to usage of the same protocol as Internet browsers, users donīt have to worry that some network port will be blocked, or that firewall will block the communication. However contrary to Internet browser, web service is not communicating with clients through displaying of home pages (consisting usually of HTML code), but is using XML - other format, that is more easily readable by software. So instead of loading big web pages, sometimes containing a lot of content that is of no interest to the users (banners, descriptions, navigation links, etc) a client program that communicates with the server hosting web service is transfering only minimal amount of data. It is particularly important for cell phones to transfer minimal amount of data because users, who use GPRS pay usually for the amount of transferred data. To download the program FOR FREE click here. Remember: it works only with Smartphone 2003 powered cellphones - like Orange SPV e200, Qtek 8080, dopod515.
