Samsung i600 attains relief from the software locking problems
February 13, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1.

Currently there are 2 MS Smartphones sold by carriers in USA: Samsung i600 sold by Verizon Wireless and Motorola MPx200 sold by AT&T Wireless:
Samsung i600 and Motorola MPx200 MS Smartphone
While Motorola MPx200 from AT&T Wireless is totally software unlocked (even for privileged mode what is totally brilliant and contrasts starkly with Motorola MPx200 from Orange in Europe), the Samsung i600 however has wrongly configured security, so even some programs properly code-signed (by GeoTrust) are not running in it. It looks like finally a hack from community solves this problem...

Here is that i600 Registry patch you were waiting for!

- This patch is ONLY for Verizon i600 with Smartphone 2002.
- Use this patch at your own risks!
- Make a backup of all important things before installing the patch, just in case. The patch does not hard-reset the phone, but better safe than sorry.

To install it:

Using the Explore tab of ActiveSync, copy the file HKCRfix.cpf in the folder \IPSM\Windows\Start Menu\Accessories\ on your i600.

Then, on the i600, go in Home > Programs > Accessories and select HKCRfix.cpf, it will install the patch on your i600 and send you a message to confirm the configuration change.

Once the patch is installed, you will be able to install all non-signed Smartphones apps, except those that use the privileged API, which still require a privileged certificate (e.g. Smartphone Notes).

To download the patch click here (you must be loggeg-in in the forum there; registration is free). The patch is provided by an anonymous user of the forum, who calls himself "msmoblies" (a pun "ms mob lies") who however is not related to the msmobiles.com web site.

Please note: ROM update to Smartphone 2003 is coming soon for Samsung i600 therefore maybe this patch will soon become obsolete. Until now no operator or distributor that sells Smartphone 2003 powered cell phones, decided to lock them - they run in a "prompt mode", meaning: user is asked whether to install or run code-unsigned application and can decide himself/herself.
