3GSM 2004 news: THE HELL HAS FROZEN OVER - Microsoft supports, embraces and sponsors MMS February 24, 2004 [General] | By anonymous 1. At 3GSM congress, when you enter the Hall 2 from the "La Croisette" (La Croissant?) street, to the right, there is an "MMS Showcase" - a group of males from some strange companies like SonyEricsson and OpenWave are standing and surrounding (trying to hide her from the public, she is so alone thus) this gal:
... whose name is "Li Chen Lim" and who is an employee of Microsoft from Redmond, USA. What is going on? Microsoft employee on the MMS related showcase? Yes, indeed, Microsoft sponsors MMS nowadays. So it looks like Microsoft´s participation in operations of OMA is bringing some results. So it looks like Microsoft is not an evil corporation ignoring cellular standards after all! As you can see here, Windows Mobile is clearly listed in the MMS supporting platforms:
After speaking with Li Chen Lim, we have learned that nowadays Microsoft has its own MMS client for MS Smartphone 2003 operating system (it is integrated into operating system of MS Smartphone), although no such MMS client is provided by Microsoft for Pocket PC phones. Please note however that some companies, that made MS smartphones still prefer to put 3rd party MMS client (not from Microsoft)! So we can say that Microsoft´s MMS client that is integrated in MS Smartphone 2003 is Microsoft´s first step toward MMS, toward open OMA wireless industry standards! When we were asking Juha Christiansen (then top marketing manager of cell phones at MS) in year 2002 why there is no MMS support in MS Smartphone, then he replied that MS prefers open Internet standards and not some proprietary thingies like MMS. ( Before late 2002, Microsoft was not supporting MMS specifications because OMA did not release their first MMS specification until November 2002, and therefore, there were no industry standards or specifications to support – only proprietary, non-interoperable solutions on the market. ) Since then, OMA announced the first MMS specification in November 2002 and a subsequent version in November 2003.
