Samsung in vicious circle of low commitment to Microsoft powered cell phones
February 28, 2004 [General] | By anonymous 1.
At 3GSM World Congress 2004 we have met Hoil Park from Samsung Electronics, who is responsible there for Microsoft powered cell phones:
... with whom we were talking about Samsung´s plans and activities regarding Microsoft powered cell phones. Read on...
Although Samsung nowadays offers some Microsoft powered cell phones - Samsung i600 smartphone and Samsung i700 Pocket PC phone - both for CDMA1X networks - still commitment of Samsung in Microsoft powered cell phones is low. This low commitment results in small sales, what gives false impression to Samsung that Microsoft powered cell phones are bringing them too little benefits to invest more in them. Unfortunately both i600 and i700 have no Bluetooth and i600 also has no camera. There is also no version of either of them for GSM. Samsung can blame only itself for creation of this vicious circle.
Here are some highlights from our talks with Hoil Park (on picture above):
- Samsung is working now on GSM version of Samsung i600 and it should be released by the end of this year - however if it will also have no built-in Bluetooth and no built-in camera (at that time 1+ megapixel cameras will be contemporary) then Samsung still may be stuck in the vicious circle of low and late commitment to Microsoft powered cell phones
- GSM version of Samsung i700 is ready and it supports SDIO Wi-Fi cards:
(on picture above SyChip Wi-Fi card connected to Samsung i700 that was presented by Hoil Park; please note: usually you can buy it under "Socket Communications" or "Symbol" brands, the one above is just some internal prototype)
- generally Samsung´s investment and commitment to Microsoft powered cell phones seems to be very small and there are no brave announcements from Samsung about releasing new Microsoft smartphones like announcements from Motorola and Mitac ; it looks like Samsung is still withholding itself from bigger investments in Microsoft powered cell phones
