Microsoft starts to employ MVPs + ARPU game February 28, 2004 [General] | By anonymous 1. While walking around the 3GSM World Congress 2004 (Cannes, EU) we have noticed, at the Microsoft Theatre, some guy shouting loudly, in an agitated way and preaching something:
... and after coming closer to this guy and looking at his exhibitor badge we have noticed that in fact it is: --- Dale Coffing --- ... an MVP from USA and web master of Pocket PC passion web site. What? Well, so after Robert Levy was recruited as an intern, Microsoft hired Dale Coffing as a contractor to do some work for them! Take a look at this question/answer from MVP FAQ: Do Microsoft MVPs receive any payment from Microsoft? No. Microsoft does provide a small award of software, but MVPs do not receive any monetary payment from the Microsoft MVP Program. While Microsoft does not pay MVPs to participate in the MVP program, in a few rare instances, some are occasionally hired at Microsoft as contractors who receive compensation or recruited as college interns through the Microsoft College Recruiting program. This is also confirmed in the MVP FAQ. To learn more about intern programs at Microsoft visit http://www.microsoft.com/college/intern/ * * * * * Anyway Dale Coffing was speaking there at the 3GSM congress about Windows Mobile being good way to improve operatorīs ARPU:
What is ARPU? "ARPU" stands for "average revenue per user" - and denotes how much money operator is making from one user - in average. Microsoft claims that while using "Windows Mobile" powered cell phones, the ARPU is increased by 25% :
On the slide above we have read these texts: Exciting Demos that show how Mobile Operators can offer New Revenue GEnerating Services New Customer Experiences Enterprise Applications Location Based Services Voice Command Instant Messaging Pocket MSN Imaging Media Proven ARPU Impact Windows Mobile based Devices deliver 25% of ARPU Uplift to Mobile OperatorsSo "Windows Mobile improves operatorīs ARPU" is a Microsoftīs mantra that Dale Coffing was preaching uncritically. However we must disclose that PalmSource and Symbian have other "research results" that point out to something not exactly the same... particularly in the view of latest non-Microsoft smart phones that also offer full web browsing (thanks to Opera browser) and have other network applications. So we must be aware that not only Microsoft but also others are playing ARPU game and we are yet to see some independent research results.
