Photo impressions from 3GSM World Congress 2004
February 29, 2004 [General] | By anonymous 1.

We present hereby some photo impressions from 3GSM World Congress 2004 that took place Feburary 23-26 in Cannes, EU. Most of them are not related to Microsoft powered cell phones, but some of them are!

Each day during the congress, several times a day, there was a fashion show where some male and female models were showing themselves with cell phone gadgetry:

... and although we donīt know what bikini bathing suit has to do with cell phones, this lady looks like a regular lady holding an umbrella:

... but if you look closer something is wrong: she has 3 hands (!!!):

... and is one of several ladies with 3 hands (the one holding the umbrella is artificial) and umbrella who were advertising Voq smartphone from Sierra Wireless.

Interestingly some meetings/interviews took place on yachts:

On above picture you can notice yachts from Sierra Wireless and PalmSource - we were on these 2 yachts to carry out interviews with managers from these companies!

On the streets of Cannes city we have spotted several ladies in green who were advertising NVidiaīs graphics chipsets for cell phones and who were driving Segway (an American toy not very popular in EU):

Here is a "Xilibri" cell phone from Siemens integrated into a bike:

Here are prototypes of "Carbonado" reference design presented by Intel:

... which one day may be released as Windows Mobile powered Pocket PC PDA phones combined with Wi-Max (= successor to Wi-Fi) wireless feature!

During Motorolaīs presentation we have noticed an inconsistency:

... where you can see a picture of MPx - a Pocket PC phone - but a screen shot used in the circle is actually from Microsoft Smartphone ! In other words Motorola made small mistake by putting screen shot from one platform (MS Smartphone) on the slide with another platform (Pocket PC)! This is similar mistake as Microsoft did (see here) - but another way around.

Although we have met shortly Andrew Thomas from Orange - the top manager there responsible for Microsoft smartphones - we couldnīt spot anything interesting at the stand of Orange! Actually Orangeīs participation in the 3GSM congress was very lame, except for this corner:

... where some people were lying on special chairs and watching some screens. It looked like some scene from a science-fiction movie!

During keynote session one interesting feature was ability to send questions to the speakers by sending an SMS to the chairman - rather than speaking it loud through the microphone (click here to read more about it - 2 our own questions were picked and thus we were able to molest CEOs of Nokia and Ericsson):

Generally speaking the 3GSM congress was located at the beach at the seaside in Cannes, here you can see a view of it with a landscape:

... and it was placed in the same buildings that famous Cannes Film Festival is located + in several ad-hoc made tent-like buildings.

All over the city of Cannes (on the buildings, on cars, on bikes, etc) there were advertisements related to the 3GSM congress, like this one from Motorola with "Motonext" motive:

Here is the sun rise over the sea in Cannes:
