American operators go bananas on GSM850 and make phones without it obsolete, Motorola MPx200 inclusive
March 08, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1.

Go bananas? As if! We wholeheartedly agree with AT&T Wireless and other operators in USA, that expand now GSM850 band (much more suitable, due to radio propagation properties, for covering bigger areas than GSM1900). Side effect of this process is the fact that phones without GSM850 band, like Motorola MPx200 either achieve poor coverage or no coverage at all (in some areas)! It looks like AT&T Wireless decided lately to make obsolete all phones without GSM850 band, including Motorola MPx200:

Attention AT&T Wireless customers: your phone is about to become obsolete. If you own one of the cellphones listed below and live in the New York metropolitan area, Northern New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Las Vegas, or Seattle, there’s a good chance that AT&T doesn’t want you to use it much longer.

GSM cellphones that operated on the 850 MHz part of the spectrum weren’t even for sale then. In the past few years compatible cellphones have become available, so Cingular and AT&T gradually have been phasing out obsolete protocols (like TDMA and analog) and building out their GSM networks at the newly freed space around 850 MHz.

The now obsolete phones will still work on the AT&T network, however they will continue to have poor reception. Use them at your own risk.

Above quotes (in italics) come from here - article that reveals more details about the whole process of making obsolete phones without GSM850, mentions Motorola MPx200 and also includes a map of USA, that shows coverage area for GSM850 band.

Please note: Motorola MPx100, Voq and Motorola MPx will be sold in USA with support for the following bands: GSM850/GSM1800/GSM1900 and the same phones in EU will be sold with support for these bands: GSM900/GSM1800/GSM1900. There is no quad-band phone in sight yet, that would be powered by Microsoft software...
