CeBIT 2004 news: Mitac extravaganza: Mitac presents new smartphone Mio 8860 + preview of the interview with the president of Mitac
March 19, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1.
We have just interviewed Corporate President of Mitac International Corporation, Mr. Francis T. Tsai:
He is a top boss of Mitac - there is nobody higher than him. We will present full transcript of this interview within 5 days from now. In meantime let us rejoice the new Mitacīs Microsoft smartphone - the Mio 8860, that was just announced at CeBIT + let us a take a peek at Mitacīs plans (preview of the interview).
Just imagine: we learned something that may convince us to abandon new upcoming Motorola MPx100 for the sake of a Mitac smartphone... read on...
First things first, so here are photos of the new Mio 8860 (for the comparisonīs sake, from left to right you can see: Orange SPV e200, Mio 8860, Mio 8390):
Here you can notice that new Mitac smartphones, when closed, are not thicker than Orange SPV e200:
And here is a glance at the new Mio 8860 that shows that now the keypad is really nice:
As a preview of the interview with Mr. Francis T. Tsai, here are some highlights:
- Mitac perceives Asia as its main market, Europe as secondary and USA is not yet under consideration by Mitac (but check transcript of the interview to be sure that we interpreted it correctly)
- Mio 8860 has external color display (improvement over Mio 8390) but no Bluetooth, however next models of Microsoft Smartphone from Mitac will have Bluetooth
- Mio 8860 offers SDIO Wi-Fi - Mitac will be selling the card, drivers and Wi-Fi software - Mitac considers to put drivers and software for SDIO Wi-Fi cards as a standard part of Mitac smartphones - in this way you could reuse your old SDIO Wi-Fi cards from Pocket PC devices right away in your Mitac smartphones! Please note: Mr. Tsai stressed that these Wi-Fi drivers for Mitac smartphones already work in Mitac labs!
- Mio 8860 offers GPS functionality over USB connecter at the bottom of the phone (not as SDIO as the product description at the CeBIT show - accessible to everybody - says)
- all Mitac phones run good Java MIDP 2.0 and thanks to fast Intel processors, not only smartphone software, but also Java runs fast in Mitac phones
- the external display in Mio 8860 can also work in "mirror mode", where you can see yourself in the camera. It also shows you photo of the person who is calling - even without opening the phone
We have further information about Mitac (not from Mitac though, but from other sources) that we will publish later (not only next Mitac models will have Bluetooth but also big external display). It seems that Mitac is starting to achieve better results than (also Taiwanese) HTC. Why is so? Well, Mitac uses Intel processors, that seem to be faster than the one from TI and Mitac is also open to innovations, as the example of Wi-Fi described above shows. If Mitac will really bring out "SDIO Wi-Fi drivers for the masses" to Microsoft smartphone, it can practically mean revolution ... and it will mean that some people will give up decision to buy Motorola MPx100 and go for a Mitac smarpthones instead...
