The first ever ROM upgrade for Smartphone 2003 powered smartphone available: Orange SPV e200 can be updated now ; HTC again fails miserably in Bluetooth area
March 20, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1.

While it certainly brings some improvements like longer battery life and higher performance (it makes phone faster), unfortunately the improvements in Bluetooth area are totally unsatisfactory: not only Handsfree (HF) Bluetooth profile has not been added (some cars are sold in Europe with Bluetooth and with this profile, not just car kits), and still connecting to Internet from notebook PC over Bluetooth is not working (dirty cheap Sony Ericsson phones with Bluetooth can do that without problems).

It is sad news, but it looks like HTC (Taiwanese hardware vendor, that makes Orange braned smartphones, and other branded too: Qtek, i-mate, etc) is not able to deliver even minimum of Bluetooth functionality. Our advice is simple: don´t buy HTC made phones any more! They are not treating end users seriously! On the other hand we recommend smartphones from Motorola, for example the Motorla MPx100 has an improved Bluetooth support - Motorola added their own profiles (Handsfree - HF - included!) and Motorola ensures that Bluetooth in their phones works properly. This what HTC delivers is a shame. We sincerely hope that HTC (the first company ever that was producing Microsoft smartphones - they have very very special treatment because of this by Microsoft) will be outphased by more customer-oriented companies like Motorola or Samsung... enough is enough.

Not only HTC (manufaturer of Orange SPV e200) is failing us, end users, but also Orange operator is: after installing of this ROM upgrade the software locking is again turned on, and you can't install then any unsigned software anymore (like freeware, etc)... this is truly a sad news for all fans of Microsoft smartphone.

To get this upgrade click here. Below some information from Orange about this update.

Upgrade your phone´s performance

You can improve the performance of your SPV E200 by downloading a new ROM Code Upgrade (click on the link at the bottom of this page). This will give you the following benefits:

Longer battery life which significantly improves standby time so that you can use your E200 much longer.

Improved sound quality from the loudspeaker, earphones, and microphone so that you can hear and be heard more clearly.

Improved Bluetooth support so that many more Bluetooth devices now work.

*PLEASE NOTE: There is no "Handsfree Profile" support in the SPV E200. If you are purchasing a car kit or handsfree Bluetooth device, ensure that the device supports "Headset Profile".

Before you continue with the update please check that:

your PC is running Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows XP

you have installed Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7 or later which is available here and which was supplied on the companion CD in your SPV E200 box

you have synchronised your SPV with your PC using the SPV cradle or USB cable

When you click on the link below to start the download, the update file will be placed on your PC first, and then automatically start the upgrade process. We have included simple instructions within this program to guide you through this process. The estimated download time is between 15 to 30 minutes.

Please connect your cradle directly into the USB port of your PC before starting the update, and ensure that your SPV is also connected to the power supply throughout the process.

Q: Will I lose my data when I upgrade?
A: Yes, all of your personal data and settings on the device will be erased by the update with the exception of the SD card content which will be left untouched.

Therefore, it is necessary to backup all your personal data (contacts, appointments, tasks) using either Active Sync or Orange Backup (in the Start/Orange folder on your phone).

To backup items like pictures, videos, backgrounds and ringtones, you will need to copy them from the SPV E200 to your PC through Active Sync by clicking on Explore and then on "My Smartphone". You can then copy the contents of the following folders to your PC:

ringtones are stored in \Storage\Application Data\Sounds\

backgrounds and themes are stored in \Storage\Application Data\Home\

pictures, videos and most of the documents you may have are stored in \Storage\My Documents"

Q: What shall I do if my phone does not switch on or the screen freezes?
A: Remove the battery for 30 seconds and replace. Power on the handset. If the handset only powers up to a screen which displays three colours, perform the following steps:

Remove the battery for 30 seconds again and replace

Place your SPV back into the cradle

The SPV should boot up and display three colours

Rerun the update programme

Q: How do I know I have successfully updated?
A: When you have powered up your SPV go to Programs, More, Settings, About your Operator ROM version should be 2.6.1.3 if you have successfully updated:
