Star Trek lands in Germany and brings Microsoft smartphone to masses
March 26, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1.

The Star Trek crew:

... lands in Germany on July 22, 2004 and brings Microsoft smartphone with car navigation system to masses. Later on they will be spreading it also across other EU countries...

Do you think that we are joking? No at all! On July 22, 2004 a new movie is coming to cinemas in Germany "space ship surprise, PERIOD 1" - a spoof movie of Star Trek (the original series with James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock), movie that is a parody of the original series and presents 2 main heros - based on Kirk and Spock characters - as gays.

Medion - a brand under which the largest European chain of supermarkets - ALDI - is selling electronics is bringing Microsoft smartphone to masses! The phone is supposed to be released and marketed together with the above mentioned movie. And it will not only be a Microsoft smartphone alone but a car navigation system based on this smartphone! ALDI, despite being a German corporation, is present also in other EU countries like UK and France. The model of the phone will be most probably Qtek 8060 made in Taiwan by HTC (hardware-wise it is the same model as Orange SPV e200 - it has built-in Bluetooth and built-in camera). Car navigation system included in the package will have speech synthesis with voice of the hero of the above mentioned movie (combined marketing effort).

Source: Smartphone-web.com (in German, but it has promotional picture of the Medion Smartphone - picture that shows combined marketing of the movie and the smartphone). Picture above comes from the website of the movie from here.

Conclusions: Medion - an unknown brand jumped in no time from nothing to 2nd or 3rd position in PDA sales in whole Europe lately - after it was selling car navigation systems based on Pocket PC. Now similar thing is about to happen with Microsoft smartphone. While Symbian phones are usually "vendor branded" and perceived as expensive, the business model of Microsoft smarpthone makes it possible to deliver relatively cheap and good "no-name" or "super-market branded" cell phones with low prices - similarly like it was happening before in PC market. And combination of Microsoft smartphone with navigation system is a very good move, that can significantly increase sales.
