Case study: Game Port from BREW to Windows Mobile-Based Devices Completed in Less Than One Month April 21, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. Microsoft presents nice case study when it is showed how Russian G5 Software company ported their existing game title from BREW (wireless Java-like platform for mobile software) to Microsoft Smartphone - and all in less than a month! Microsoft mentiones that motivation of this company to port: G5 wanted to reach a broader international audience, as well as mitigate costs of maintaining applications on its Qualcomm BREW wireless platform. ... but forgets to mention that software market for Microsoft smartphones is (yet) extremely tiny and usually no developer could survive by making games just for Microsoft Smartphone...
(on picture above: the game mentioned in this case study) In the spring of 2003, G5 management decided to port its popular Fight Hard game to the Smartphone after Sergey Shoolts, the Head of the Mobile Department, learned about the Mobile2Market program when he attended a Microsoft® Windows Mobile™-based Smartphone seminar in Moscow. The Mobile2Market program connects developers to mobile operators and retailers worldwide through a certification process, marketing support, and the Windows Mobile Application Catalog. Shoolts returned motivated and ready to begin development on the Smartphone version of the game. "The Mobile2Market program was a natural move for us, as we are always looking to expand our customer base," says Suglobov. All of the 42 G5 developers had experience combining projects of various scales and for different platforms. G5's staff also included many PC developers who had A and AA titles in development, so developing for the Smartphone was a natural progression. To read more about this case study click here.
