Vodafone - the biggest cellular network operator in the world - goes for Microsoft powered cell phones April 30, 2004 [Pocket PC phone] | By anonymous 1. Vodafone is not only the biggest but also the most succesful (financially) operator in the world. Vodafone has subsidiaries in many countries in the world and in some other countries it owns ("only") significant number of shares of other operators. Vodafone is a role model for other operators. If Vodafone says that something is good, then it must be very good. Vodafone says that Microsoft powered cell phones are good and starts offering them on more and more markets (i.e. countries).
Vodafone doesn't like Nokia due to Nokia's industrial practices (disregarding needs of operators, taking care of its own brand more than the brand of the operator) and we don't like Nokia either (we are fans of Microsoft powered cell phones) so it looks like there is a lot to celebrate! This time we are talking not about some secondary provincial country far away from everywhere but about Vodafone Europe - there where the heart (headquarters) of Vodafone is located: No, Vodafone is not risking yet to start selling (directly through its own shops, not just through distributors) Microsoft Smartphone powered cell phones in Europe, it is selling them in New Zealand - where market success or failure due to tiny size of the market doesn't matter much. In Europe Vodafone starts with Pocket PC phone - the Qtek-branded model. It costs just 379.00 EURO if user buys it with 24 months long subscription, or 699.00 EURO when purchased without any subscription. Both prices already include tax. For more information about this Pocket PC phone click here (online shop of Vodafone, not just some Vodafone's distributor). We must admit however that it looks like efforts of Vodafone to introduce Microsoft powered cell phones to end customers are not coordinated because the MS Smartphone sold by Vodafone New Zealand is branded by Carrier Devices (brand: "i-mate") and the one sold in Europe is branded by Qtek (brand: "Qtek"). Vodafone offering Microsoft powered cell phones is a big breakthrough for Microsoft because it means that end users will be able to buy these phones through the vast (!) network of Vodafone shops (Brick & Mortar Shops, not just some online venues with tiny number of visitors)! We repeat: it is not about some Vodafone distributor offering MS powered cellphone with Vodafone subscription, it is about Vodafone itself selling Microsoft powered cell phones!!!
