Microsoft withdraws from selling of Wi-Fi gear
May 11, 2004 [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] | By Edward J. R.
Microsoft was offering Wi-Fi access points, USB Wi-Fi cards and PCMCIA Wi-Fi cards. While the sales of existing equipment will continue for some months to follow yet, Microsoft decided to withdraw from this part of hardware making business (Microsoft mice and keyboards stay).
It is visible therefore, that contrary to Nokia
(the owner of Symbian), Microsoft doesn't want to "eat cake and have cake" but is just offering software (for cell phones) and not both software and hardware, what would disturb competition.
Please note: Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC is still the best platform for Wi-Fi as far as PDAs are concerned and Microsoft's commitment to Wi-Fi in operating systems stays in place too.
