Sony launches the smallest PC of the world: Sony VAIO U series
May 12, 2004 [mobile PCs (Tablet PC, mini-PC, ...)] | By Edward J. R.
Why would you like to buy Pocket PC that can run only limited number of software and most of it is primitive if you could have a regular PC of the size roughly speaking the same as Pocket PC? We have been thinking by now that such device will be released around year 2006 but it looks like Sony will release such device this year (in Japan: May 2004, elsewhere later on in the year):
Specifications and characteristics of this device are:
- display: 800x600 pixels (touchscreen with stylus, not digitizer - thus requiremetns to be a Tablet PC are not met - Tablet PC needs to have a digitizer so that touching the screen with fingers doesn't work)
- operating system: Windows XP Professional
- processor: Pentium M 1GHZ (for model: VAIO-U70P) or Celeron M 0.9 GHz (for model: VAIO-U50I)
- RAM memory: 256 MB (for model: VAIO-U50I)
or 512 MB (for model: VAIO-U70P)
- hard disk: 20 GB
- price (in Japan): less than 2000 USD - around 1800 EURO

Remember this is just one of the first devices of this category: mini-PC (smaller than regular Tablet PC but [yet] bigger than Pocket PC) but we can expect more cheaper models soon!
