Microsoft Reader for Microsoft Smartphone - available at last!
May 16, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

Microsoft Reader is an eBook reader available for Pocket PC and Windows XP platforms. Interestingly Microsoft adds free dictionaries (English-English and English-some other languages) to this eBook reader. By now it was impossible to read eBooks in Microsoft Reader format (file extension: *.LIT) in Microsoft Smartphone...

... and everybody was wondering why Microsoft is making this cardinal error of not porting Pocket PC version of Microsoft Reader to Microsoft Smartphone (after all both Pocket PC and Microsoft Smartphone are powered by the very same core operating system: Windows CE) and after all many Pocket PC users is considering abandoning Pocket PC for the sake of MS Smartphone, but can't do it due to the lack of Microsoft Reader for Microsoft Smartphone...

... but now at last there is some light in tunnel. However it is not what everybody expected - that Microsoft will port MS Reader to MS Smatrphtone. The solution, albeit partial, comes from company producing Tiny eBook Reader program, which in latest version (2.0) now supports reading of eBooks in format of MS Reader (LIT).

Unfortunately Tiny eBook Reader 2.0 supports only non-secure LIT files - files that have no protection with DRM (Digital Rights Management). All the best eBooks, particularly those that are expensive or recently released, are however stored in secure LIT format, therefore are not readable with this eBook reader!

Please note: practically the makers of Tiny eBook Reader could add also support for eBooks in secure LIT (secure MS Reader) format - there are some solutions to decode this format available in the Internet - but this would violate copyright laws, that clearly state that breaking copyright protection in any form is not allowed. Theoretically Microsoft could even force makers of Tiny eBook Reader to remove LIT support altogether, and they couldn't do anything...
