BenQ dumps Symbian and goes for Microsoft powered cell phones May 21, 2004 [General] | By Edward J. R. While we were visiting CeBIT 2004 trade show we were reporting in details (with many many photos) about BenQ P50 and we were enquiring BenQ employees very hard whether more Windows Mobile powered devices - like Microsoft Smarpthone from BenQ - will be coming. We coudn't get any answer then, but now here it comes: BenQ, Taiwan’s largest own-brand handset vendor, plans to launch several smartphones based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 2003 OS, according to company chairman KY Lee. ... reports Taiwanese professional publication, but unfortunately they denote even BenQ P50 - a Pocket PC phone:
... which certainly is not a Microsoft Smartphone by a term "smartphone". To read more about BenQ introducing more Windows Mobile cell phones click here. Please note: market situation is such that Taiwanese manufacturers cannot compete with mainland China due to lower manufacturing costs there, and therefore now there is a trend that Taiwanese manufacturers want to go "Samsung way" and promote their own brands and concentrate on more sophisticated cell phone models... it looks like BenQ is doing just that.
